*Cf\illaiid well-regulated employment is both
tie dutv and the real happiness o( a man.
Men who can nut get the full occupation they
nßure unhappy, whereas they might well
derive consolation from the tact that they
already possess that leisure which is often the
busv man's chi> f aim in life, and that they
are released from the perils and r, sponsibil
ities which an overcrowded life presents. The
successful mau is often pre-eminent for
failures. That man is to be pitied who is so
verv successful in his business that he has no
time for literature and art: grudges evening
parties; can rarely get a week's shooting,
and scarcely ever a month's vacation. There
isatimcwbcn a busy man’s time is exceeding
ly rateable The temptation is almost over
whelming to him when he finds that he can
coin his minutes into dollars- Then the poor
lellcw sacrifices the real good of his life for
the means of living. A great power of ac
quiring ofton disqualifies a man for expending.
The result of the multiplicity of engage
mail! is, often enough, a headache. The
headache has its uses in the economy of
things. It accomplishes one of the benevo
lent intentions of pain, in giving a man a
hinttud forewarning that the delicate ma
thiuery of the brain is overtaxed. Some
limes a ana works himself into a position, or
a position has come upon him, to grapple
adequately with which is really beyond his
power; sod even an active business man
who delights in business will be dismayed by
the accumulation of his correspondence and
the multiplicity ol his engagements. The
speedy result ot the frightful burden of cares
tone hy many men is anxious and haggard
faces. So it is even with successtul men,
the lawyer nr physicianin full practice, the
author in the lull tide ot literary success.
Then a nervous headache very commonly
set! iu. A man ought to take this a.s a hint,
nut exactly that lie should knockoff work,
but that he should take it more judiciously.
A great deal depends upon arrangement.
There are persons who. midst a variety of
engagements, begin with the 'least important
ud work their way to the most important,
resembling the architects us LapiUa, who bc
gin with the roof in the air, and work down
»ird to the foundation in the ground; That
is a mistake. When you have arranged your
busiuesa ir. the order o! importance, the great
thing is not to attempt to) much, hut to do
things one at a time. Canning was greatly
impressed with this notion. Wo find him
writing to a friend ; “Pozzj told iuo a story
»ne day which was new to me, and made a
strong impression on me. ‘Such a person/
aid one of the speakers in the dialogue, ‘was
a great man; but how did he manage to do
so many great things in his life?' ‘Uy doing
them, was the auswt r, ‘one after the other.’ ”
Again, one ought to remember that, within
certairi limits, a man may he as busy as he
Hies, but outside those limits he Inis no busi
ness to be busy. A man ought never to
allow himself to be so occupied that lie be
comes dyspeptic ; that he can not play with
bis children and make love to his wife ; that
!"• ton not thoroughly enjoy a book ; that lie
uni not attend to those higher thoughts that
»w'p the life of intellect and spirit .sweet and
wholesome. However excited Sir Robert
ieel might have been with parliamentary
strife, he always made a point of reading
