Mr. Nasby goes as a Delegate to New York—
He gives an Account of some of the D\ffi
culties that Beset Him on the Way and in
the Great City.
New Yohk, I
(At a cheep boardin house}, •
July the 4, 1868. j
Es I hed knowd just wat I hed to ga
thro with, I never wood have figured for
. the prtsishen I now okkepy. Hjpd 1 knowd
the troubles wich was to beset me, the
Corners might hev gone unrepresented,
and the Democrisy might hev nominated a
candidate without my help. I am at a
cheep boardin house-, wish is salubrusly
sitooated. on an’ alley, the landlady bein
one uv the anshent Kings of Ireland, wich
her name is O’Shaughnessy. 1 coodcnt
get rooms at the Aster, nor the St. Nicho
las, ez I coodent get a clerk tp look at me
for an hour, and when I did succeed in
rivitiu the attenshun uv one, he flew into a
passion and ordered me to move on, with
the onfeelin remark that he hed no room
for sieh. And that insult mite be added
to injoory, the oufeeling .woman who pie
sides over the manshea I inhabit, peremp
torily refoosed to rcseeve me until I paid in
advance. I tried several places, but ez I
hedn’t no baggage, the prevailin opinyuu
seemed to be that advance payment wood
be better, and I wuz forst to return to her.
My adventures on the route were noomer
ous, if not pleasant.
At some pint in Ingiuny, wher we changed
cars, I found the Iraue we had to take full
uv delegates. In lookin around for a sect, 1
diskivered but one that hadn’t two in it, and
that one hed in it a disgustin nigger, who
hed the impoodence to be well drest, and hed
a carpet sack behind him. My Demokratic
blood riz to-wunst. Feelin that in a car
filled with Demokratic delegates, anything I
shood do to a nigger wood be safe, I stawkt
proudly up to him, holdin my nose:
‘‘Good Lord!” sed I, “wal a smell.”
‘‘Good Lord I” ekoed the. delegates which
got on at that stasheii, “wat a terrible smell.”
“My gentle Afrikin friend,” sed I, seez'm
him by the collar, “I regret the nocessity uv
sayin disagreeable things and still more uv
ddin em, but the fact is, yoor'•impudence in
gittin into a car uv while gentlemen with
the disgustin odor inseparable from and*part
uv the Afrikin race is rutlier too much. And
more especially do I wonder at. yoor keepiu
yoor sect while I and these other white gen
tlemen are standin.”
“Out with the nigger I” yelled the lately
arrived delegates ; “hustle the stinkin cuss.”
“Merciful hevens, wat a smell I” song out
others uv etn ; “hist him 1” “hist him I”
Seein myself thus backed, and feelin that
a little zeal wood be safe, cz niggers jean’t
vote, 1 knocked his hat out uv the winder
and followed that "demonstrashun with a
serious attempt at liftin him out uv his seat.
I wood hev succeeded, but the nigger resist
ed, and resisted vigorously, to-wit: he
knocked three uv my front teeth down my
throte, pulled out wat little there wuz left
uv the hare that hangs in scanty festoons
about my venerable temples, and blacked
both uv my eyes. I wuz lying-on my back
in the passage, somewhat astonisht, the
nigger a standin over me, with 'his boot
heel raised over my face, when some gen
tlemen came in from another car and re
trained him.
“Mr. Williams,” said they, “let him up.
He's poor white trash, not worth wastin
your indignashen onto. Let him up. Mr.
Williams, let him up.”
“Sirs,” sed I, risin to my feet tremulous
with rage, “is this the treatment lam to
expect all the way to Noo York? Am Ito
be pounded to jelly by a nigger—-a stinkiu
nigger, sirs, whose odor, even now makes
the car untenable to gentlemen of refined
sensibilities—and to heer the nigger ad
> dressed ez ‘Mister’ after that, instid uv
bein tored to pieces by the Infuriated spec
tators 1 Oh shame, where is thy blush ?’<’
“Yoo mizrable cuss,” sed one uv these
gentlemen, "apologize to wunstto this gen
tleman for yoor insultin roodness, or we’ll
chuck yoo out uv the cars. Apologize, sir,
to Mr. Josef Williams, Delegate at Large for
the State uv lennessee!"
I almost fainted. This nigger, then, wuz
a delegate 1 He wuz a regler delegate, armed
and equipped with reglar credenshels to a
Demokratic Nashnel Canycnshen, and 1 hed
been guilty in iny zeel uv assaultin uv him 1
Gladly I apologyzed, and further, I humbly
begged, permission to sit beside him, wich
he accordid with a gracrousness I never saw
ekalled.
It wuz astonishin the change that crept
over the Injeany delegates. They crowded
around us and shook him by the hand; they
didn't smell any odor at all any more ; on
the contrary, they seemed to like him. They
addrest him ez “Mister,” and sevral uv em
in interdocin him to ther friends, who-got on
at various stashens, yoosed the prefix “Hon
orable.” . It's wonderful wat a difference it
makes with a nigger to hev a’vote, and also
how he votes! Hed that Williams bin
infected with Ablishnism, I make no doubt
that the stench wich I reely fancied I smelt
when I hist undertook to subjoogate him,
wood hev continyooed to the end uv the trip.
In olden tame it wuz observed the slave
niggers didn’t smell—it wuz only the free
ones. It is a settled fact now that Demo
kratic niggers are inodorous 1 I mite hev
known, however, that the nigger wuz a free
nigger, by the way he pitched into me. No
nigger in a state uv servitood wood ever hev
did sieh a thing. That much they owe to
the war, any how.
My principal objick in going to Noo York
wuz to do what I cood towards securin the
nominashen uv Jethro L._ Kippins. I found
the delegates badly tore up. The offers,
made for votes wuz so ridiculously low that
there wuz much disgust manifested.* The
trouble was that the markit was overstock!.
Hed the convenshen been pritty ekally
divided, and the balance uv power held by a
few dost mouthed souls, they cood have
made a good thing uv it. But where a
♦hole convenshen is in the markit, and all
their inflooenshel trends, no candidate kin
uflwd to buy. 1 withdrew Mr. Rippins to
wusijor ez ho bez but a small tana, and
that nortjraged to a grocery keeper, the
delegates Capproacbt lalt mo toskorn.
I wuz on the Committee on Kesojooshens,
or ruther wi. ? in the room as a sort uv
. advisory committee while the resoloosheus
wuz bein draltei, General Forrest, uv
Tennessee, was partiklerly* auxshus that a
resolooshen should, be aloptid denauncin
the Radicals, who wuz, with u>hdy hands,
a striviiuto destroy the best gefgrnment the
sun ever shone upon, and one tie destruction
uv wich wood be a calamity with unborn
millions wood shed tcers over. He desired
a resolooshen plodgin Hie Democrisy to
stand by the old Stars aid Stripes, which
flag bad braved a thousand breezes, and wuz
synonomous, et settry. Mr. Woolley, Mr.
Cobb (Mrs. Cobb’s busiaud), and Perry
Fuller, periiklerly desired a resolooshen
demanding the Goverumeui might lie ad
ministered with suthin like the purity wich
distinguished it doorii. the ad mi nist rash cn
uv.the late lamented Bookaunon, at the
menshun uv whose name every.-delegate
present held a haukcrcber to his eyes for five
consecutive jninits, ez thu a grate hed
fallen onto him. -
Valiaiidygum insisted that a plank be
inserted which recognized nigger suffrage,
but that.wuz withheld outil it cood be defi
iiitly ascertained whether Mississipf* wuz
reely carried by nigger voles or not. Es a
majority uv the niggers did reely vote the
Demokratic ticket, it wuz decided that they
shood be recognized ez our ekals—ef not,
we’d see ’em d—d Lust.
Chief Justice Chase wuz espesheUy aux
yus lor a resolution d'enouiisiu in the severest
terms them unprincipled, fanatical Radikals,
who for yeai'4 hed biu Jaboriu to subvert the
government by iuterferein with the persuus

in the conveushun to that wise Conservatism
without which ther cood'be no permanence
in our government.

the delegates. Es its Pendleton, on a

its Seymour, on a nashenal bunk platform,

Breckinridge the choice uv the party, and
delighted if Hancock should be chosen. I
kin hurrah for Chase, and with ekal vigger
kin swing my hat for Vallandygttm, and 1
find all the delegates similarly affedtfti.
'The post ottis is the lean kinc wich swallers
up all the others. We are willin to sink
everythin in the post offis. That my sitr
ccrity may not be doubted, let it be re
membered that 1 hev rid with a nigger
from Ingeany to Noo York ; hev biu whaled
by one, and hev- felt good over it; hev
been hurrahip for an old line Ablishunist,

Asiatic Cholera in China.
ALMOST EVERY CASE
CURED WITH
PAIN ‘KILLER.
V 5 EAD THE FOLLOWING LETTER FROM
k Rev. R. Telford, Missionary in China, now
visiting hie home in Pennsylvania:
Washington, Pa., June 25,1866:
Messrs. Perry Davis & Son, Providence, R. 1.:
Dear Sirs -During a residence of some ten
years as a Missionary in Siam and China, I found
your Vegetable Pain "Killer a most valuable
remedy for that fearful scourge. the-Cholera.
In adininistuimg the medicine, I found it most
effectual to give a teaspoonfui of Pain Killer in a
gill of hot wrier sweetened with sugar; then,
after about fifteen minutes, begin to give a table
spoonful of the same mixture every ininnte until
relief was obtained. Apply hot applications to
the extremities.. Bathe Hie stomacfi with Pain
Killer, clear and rub the limbs briskly. Os those
who had the cholera, and took the medicine faith
fully in the way stated above, eight out of ten
recovered. Yonrs, truly,
R TELFORD.
If an athick with Diarrlxaa, Dysentery, or
Cramp Colic, don’t delay the use of the Pain
Killer. Sold by all med lei tie dealers. Price, 55
cents, 50 cents, and $1 per bottle.
Manhattan, Kansas, April 17,1866.
Gentlemen— * * " I want to say a little
more about, the Pain Killer. I consider it a wrv
valuable medicine, and always keen it, on liana.
I have travelled a good deal since I nave been in
Kansas, and never without taking it with me.
In my practice I used it freely for the Asiatic
Cholera, in 1819, and With better success than any
other medicine ; I also used it here for chcfera in
1855, with the same good result.
Truly, yours, A. HUNTING, M. D.
Swato, China.
Cholcia ’ * * * I regret to eay that the
cholera haP prevailed here of late to a fearful
extent. For the last three weeks, from ten to
fifty or sixty fetal cases each day has beeu re
ported. I should add that, the Pain Killer, sent
recently kvui tile Mission House, has been used
with considerable success during this epidemic.
If taken in season is generally effectual in check
ing (he disease.

Sholapoie, India.

Summer Complaint and Dysentery*
Bowel complaints seem just now to be the
prevailing element, and any medicine that is
everywhere acceptable, and that is reliable, is a
very desirable acquisition. From what we have
seen, heard, and experienced, we believe Davis'
Pain Killer is this desideratum. For the best
method of using it, we quote from the directions:
“For common bowel complaints, give one tea
spoonfulin a gill of new milk and molasses, iu
equal parts, stirred well together, lessen the dose
for children, according to the age. If tile pain be
severe bathe the boWels aud hack with the tnudi
' cine. This mode of treatment is good in cases of
the cholera morlais, sudden stoppages, etc. Re
peat t he dose every hour.
“The quickest way 1 ever ‘saw the dysentery
cured was by taking one spoonful of the Pain
Killer in one gill of milk ami molasses stirred
well logetlmr and drank hot. at the same time
bathing the bowels freelv with medicine. Let
the dose be repeated every, hour until the patient
is relieved.” • ,
If every person- who lias reason to fear (Lie
disease would provide themselves with a bottle
of tliia medicine, and use as occasion required, we
believe a great amount of guttering and sickness
would be saved. jeli—2m
