REPUBLICAN I’LATFOK 1«.
The National Republican party of life Cuifed States,
asbeinbled in National Convention,ln the city <d Chi
cago, on the 20th day of May, 1868, make the following
Declaration of Principles :
Ist. We congratulate the country 011 the assured suc
cess of the- reconstruction policy of Congress, a?
evinced by the adoption, in a majority of the States
lately in rebellion, of Constitutions seculing equal civil
and political rights to all, and regard it as the duty of
the Government to sustain those Institutions, and to
prevent the people of such States from being remitted
to a slate of anarchy.
2d. The guarantee, by Congress, of equal suffrage to
all loyal men iu the South was demanded by every con
sideration of public safety, of gratitude and of justice,
and must be mainlaiueit, while the question of suffrage
In all the loyal States properly belongs to the people of
those States.
3d. We denounce all Ibrms of repudiation as a na
tional crime, and the national honor requires the pay
ment of the public indebtedness, in the utmost good
faith, to aircreditots, at home and abroad, not only
according to the letter, but the spirit of the laws
under which it .was contracted.
4th. It is due to the labor of the nation that taxation
should be equalized and reduced <is rapidly as the na
tional faith will permit.
-sth. The national debt, contracted, as it has been, for
the preservation of the Uniop for all time to come,
should be extended over a fair period for redemption,
and it is the uuty of Congress to reduce the rate of in
terest'thereon, whenever it can honestly be done.
6th. That the best policy to diminish our burden of
debt is to so improve our credit that capitalists will seek
to loan us money at lower rates of interest than we now
pay, and must continue to pay, so long as repudiation,
partial or total, open or covert, is threatened or sus
pected.
7th. The Government of the United States should be
administered with the strictest economy, and the cor
ruptions which have been so shamefully nursed and
fostered by Andrew Johnson call loudly for fidijal re
form.
Bth. We profoundly deplore the untimely and tragic
death of Abraham Lincoln, and regret the accession of
Andrew Johnson to the Presidency, who has acted
treacherously to the pedpie who elected him and the
cause be was pledged to support ; has usurped high
legislative and judicial functions; This refttsed to exe
cute the laws; has used his high Office to induce other
officers to ignore and violate the laws; has employed
his executive powers to render insecure the property,
peace, liberty and life of the citizen; has abused the
pardoning power; has denounced the National Legisla
ture as unconstitutional; has persistently and
resisted, by every measure in his power, evjcry proper
attempt at the reconstruction of the States lately in re
bellion; has perverted the public patronage it to an
engine of wholesale corruption; and has been justly
impeached fdr high crimes and mi. demeanors, and
properly pronounced guilty thereof by the vote of
thirty-five Senators.
9tJ». The doctrine of Great Britain and other European
powers, that because a man is once a subject, he is
always so, must be resisted at every hazard by the
United States, as a relic of the feudal time, not author
ized by the law of nations, and at war with oUr national
honor and independence. Naturalized citizens are enti
tled to be' protected in nil their lights of citizenship as
though they were natural born, and no citizen of the
United States, native or naturalized, must be liable to
arrest and imprisonment, by any foreign power, for acts
done, or words spoken, in this country, and Ts so arrested
and imprisoned, tt 4s the duty of the Government to
interfere in his behalf.
lOtii. Os all who were faithful in the trials of the lats
war, there xvere none entitled to more espial honor
than the brave soldiers and seamen, who euoufed the
hardships of the campaign and cruise, and imputed
their lives in the service of the country. The Jfeujttiei
and pensiomi provided by law for these brave defteiwers
of the nation are obliagtions never to be forgotten. The
widows aud orphans of the gallant dead are the wards of
the people, a sacred legacy bequeathed to the nation’s
protecting care.
11th- Foreign immigration, which in the past has
added so much to the wealth, development of resources,
and increase of power of this nation, the asylum of the
oppressed of all nations, should be teetered and encour
aged by a liberal and just policy.
12th. This Convention declares its sympathy with all
the oppressed people which are struggling for their
righte.

Messrs. Perry Davisdk Son, Providence, li. I.:
Dear Sire —During a residence of some ten
years as a Missionary in Siam and China, I found
you>' vegetable Pain Killer a most valuable
remedy for that fearful scourge, the Cholera.
in administering the medicine, I found it most
effectual to give a teaspooiiful of Pain Killer in a
gilt of hot water sweetened with sugar; then,
after about fifteen minutes, begin to give a table
spoonful ot the same mixture every minute until
relief was obtained. Apply hot applications to
the extremities. Bathe the stomach with Pain

Killer. Hold by al) medicine dealers. Price, 25

Manhattan, Kansas, April 17,1866.
Gentlemen— * * * I want to say a little
more about the Pain Killer. I consider it a eery
valuable medicine, and always keep it on bund.
1 have travelled a good deal since I have beeu in
Kansas, and never without taking it with me.
In my practice 1 used it freely for the Asiatic
Cholera, in 1819, and with better success than any
other medicine; I also used it bene for cholera in
1855, with the same good result.
Truly, yours, A. HUNTING, M. I).
Swato, China.
Choleia! * * * I regret to aay that the
Cholera lias prevailed here of late to a fearful
extent. For the last three weeks, from ten to
fitly or sixty fatal eases each day has been r e
ported. I should add that the Pain Killer, sent
recently from the Mission House, has been used
with considerable success during this epidemic.
Iftaken in season is generally effectual In eheck

Summer Complaint and Dysentery-
Bowel complaints seem jiist now to be the
prevailing dement, aud any medicine that is
everywhere acceptable, and that is reliable, is a
very desirable acquisition. From what we have
seen, heard, and experienced, we believe Davis'
Pain Killer is thia desideratum. For the best
method of nsingit.we quote from the directions:
“For common bowel complaints, give one tea
sfoonful in a gill Os new milk and. molasses, in
equal parts, stirred well together; lessen the dose
tor cjnldren, according to the age. If the pain be
severe, bathe the bowels aud back with the medi
cine. Thia mode of treatment Is good in cases ol
the cbelera morbus, sudden stoppages, etc. Re
peat the dew every hhur.
“The quickest way 1 .ever saw the dysentery
cured was by taking one spoonful of the Pain
Killer in one gill of milk and molasses stirred
well together and drank hot, at the aame lime
bathing the bowels freely with medicine. Let
the dose be repeated every hour nutil tlie patient
is relieved.’’
If every peraou who has reason to fear thia
disease Wonbl provide theamelvee with a bottle
of this medicine, and use as occasion required, we
believed great amount of suffering and sickness
would be saved. jel2—2m
