The Corn Crop.
Some of our country friends insist that
they will make plenty of corn in spite of all
the croaking and grumbling. The late rains
have helped them wouilei.ully—in many
cases doubled-and trebled their prospects.
But they do not pretehd to speak of all.
Glad to hear that many arc much better off
than supposed a few days ago.
Hunt All Night.
We remember seeing, some years since, in
an agricultural work now out of print, an
article on “Economy in Caudles,” which may
be new and useful to many of our readers-
When, as in case of sickness, a dull light is
■wished, or when the matches arc mislaid, put
finely powdered salt on the candle till it
reaches the black part of the wick, In this
way a mild and steady’ light may be kept
through the night by a small piece of candle.
New Remedy lor Sunilrokt.
In Egypt, where sunstroke is of frequent
occurrence, the Arabs'dissolve some salt
in water and pour it into the ears of the
patient. This almost immediately relieves
the sufferer. We know not what the effect,
simple in its character, of this remedy
would be, but its application could not
injure the patient. Should it prove an
active agent, it would have a tendency to
dissipate the dread now entertained against
the exposing of the person to the heat of
the noonday sun. It might even do more
save the lives of hundreds who are swept
out of existence simply because of the
great ignorance which prevails among
medical men as to the most efficient man
ner of approaching and treating cases of
soup de solid.
Crops in Use South.
The prospect of good crops in every part
of the South is cheery. Our correspondents
in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Toxas
write us particularly hopeful letters. What
the people of those States stand most in need
of, next to good government, is money. This
they are likely to have in greater abundance
than during any year since the war. In our
own business we begin already to perceive a
healthful atmosphere. Every day the mails
bring us letters from every corner and cross
road containing amounts that range from
fifty cents to fifty dollars, and often much
larger sums. These go to show the
people are up and doing, that they lake an
interest in affairs, that they do not despair.
We are truly glad to sec it, as well for our
own sake as Ibr theirs. The- Republican
can never want for readers whili patriotic
men have full pockets, and the pockets of
Southern men will not want for greenbacks
so long as God blesses the Southern laud
with good crops.
Postal.
The new post office law agreed upon by
the Committee of Conference of both Houses
of Congress, introduces some new and iur
portent changes in the mode of conducting
the business of the department. It provides
for the return of all letters on which the
name of the sender is endorsed, if not called
for within thirty days; reduces the fees on
money orders; doubles the compensation of
postmasters for the payment of money orders;
allows weekly newspapers sent to regular
subscribers in the county where published to
be delivered free of postage from the post
office nearest the place of publication ; au
thorizes the issue of duplicate money orders
for such as have been lost; makes it felony
to counterfeit money orders; authorizes the
Postmaster General to appoint a route agent
with a salary of $2,000, oir the line from
San Francisco to Japan, and another with
the same salary on the line from San Eran'
cisco to Honolulu; directs him to establish
at a reasonable compensation, a general
postal agency at Shanghae, China, with branch
agencies at other ports in said country ; gives
him power to create in his own department
a foreign mail service bureau, at a yearly
expense of SB,OOO ; gives him auothet chief
of division at a salary of $2,500 ; makes it
felony of high character to use postage
stamps a second lime knowingly; declares
that it shall be unlawful to deposit in the
Post Office any letters or circulars concern
ing lotteries or gift enterprises of any kind
on any pretext whatever ; establishes a blank
agency in the Post Office Department at an
expense of $5,000 annually, and abolishes all
other blank agencies ; empowers ihe Post
master General to negotiate and conclude an
international money order arrangement;
provides that the sureties on bonds of de
faulting postmasters shall not be liable
unless the Government institutes a suit
withia three years after the final settlement
of accounts; allows certified copies of Post
master's returns to be used as evidence in
Courts on criminal prosecutions ; authorizes
the Postmaster General to prescribe a uni
form for letter carriers, and makes it a mis
demeanor for any one else to wear the same.

Editor National Republican :
The inactivity which characterized the pro
vision market at |he date of my last continued
up to Wednesday, when some orders were re
ceived from Baltimore a,id other distributing
points, and these, together with favorable ad
vices from New Orleans, caused a decidedly firmer
market, and enabled holders to establish an
advance on most articles. This, however, re
stricted operations to some extent, though holders
were not inclined to yield any of the advantages
gained, and it is doubtful if purchases could bo
made to any extent at my quotations, as holders
generally are confident, and as soon as a disposi
tion was manifesto 1 to buy at the prices asked,
they would put-up tbolr figures. A portion of
the stock is in the hands of parties who bought
some time slnco on speculation, and at figures
above their present level, and they are not willing
to sell at a loss as long as there is any prospect
of improvement in prices, The market closed
very firm at my quotations.
