One of the best articles of diet, at this
season of the year, and a good one at all
seasons, is Rice. If people would eat
plenty of well cooked rice, they would have
fewer disturbonces of the digestive appa

Judge O’Byrne, Ordinary, has appointed

Tomato Wino.
We have received the following receipt for
making this pleasant beverage: Take small,
ripe tomatoes, pick off" the stems, put the
tomatoes in a tub and wash them clean.
Then strain through a linen or fine cotton
bag. One bushel of tomatoes will make five
gallons of pure wine. Add two and a half
or three pounds of loaf to each gallon of
juice. Then put in a cask and let it ferment
as for other wines.

What ia a Druuk !
There are perhaps many who can say
from personal experience that it is a deuced
bad thing. Our object, however, in putting
the question is to give a scientific answer,
furnished by the North American Relieve,
which says that at the beginning of a
carouse ot a drunkard, alcohol stimulates
the action of the heart, which now sends
blood rapidly to the lungs for juration. A
large supply of blooddisks consequently
reach the brain, which is now stimulatedinto
activity. The ideas of the drinker now flow
rapidly, at first coherently, but soon without
.control; the brain matter wastes too rapidly,
and delirium ensues. During this time the
volatile alcohol is diffusing itself through the
system, converting arterial into vdnww
blood, nnd loading that fluid with a spirit
which has a tendency to prevent-change in
the tissues, so that the drunkard gradually
becomes stupid, falls off his chair in the
stupor ol sleep, or if too far gone, dies of
venous apoplexy.
Dsa'l.
We hope some of our young folks will
not consider us hard on them if we make
a frank comment upon Some of their
peculiarities of manner in public places of
worship and amusement. For instance,
few things are in worse taste than for a
young lady to be laughing and talking, or
looking all around her Suring divine wor
ship. The demeanor of a well bred young
woman is never so evinced as by her
conduct and manner in public. Whatever
you do then, . avoid as you would the
greatest impropriety the abominable habit
of talking and laughing loud. Nothing
is so ill bred, nothing so low. People can
make themselves heard without all of the
violence of speech and manner that offends
quiet folks every day. Ik is utterly
cessary to speak or laugh as loud as vTe all
hear people do every day, and when loud
talking is coupled with bad grammar or
slang, the effect is too odious to think
of. One of the first things that
ought to be taught and inculcated in
all of our public and private schools, is the
habit of speaking low nnd gently. A man
, or woman of culture and refinement is at
once known by the manner of speech and
the intonation of the voice in talking. The
men of weight in this world are the quiet
people. The hollowing, bellowing men and
screeching, giggling women, never accom
plished anything. They are all “sonrtd and
f “ry, signifying nothing.” Whatever, them
society "has found will not do, it taboos, and,
therefore, it frowns upon“l<Midneas,'’ whether
of dress, voice, or manner. There are, it is
tn»e, a great many very worthy people who
do talk as if you were across the river, when
you may not be two feet from; but these
exemplary beings, who are so trusted and
respected for their homely virtues, neverthe
less offend your ear most grievously by
bawling at you almost. In short, load laugh
lng and talking, in public or private, is, as
g#TSi “Most intolerable, and not
to be endured." Reform it altogether.

discovering that your horse is foundered,
mix about a pint of the whole seed in his
food, and it will perfect a cure. Sunflowers
are easily grown alongside of fences and iu
