Beware of Jealousy.
Recently, a jealous husband, with a view'
of verifyijjg rumors of his wife’s unfaith
fulness, followed her slyly as she started
out for anevenipg ramble, until she reached
a bluff overlooking the river, where she
seated herself, and presently, to the horror
‘and indignaticn of the husband, she was
joined by a man who familiarly took a seat
close to her, In the uncertain light he
could not distinguish the features of cither.
Enraged beyond measure, he made a dash,
as he supposed, on the guilty pair, and
without a moment’s hesitation began to
abuse his better half in the most violent
manner. Judge of his consternation when
the strange gentleman was recognized as
the lady’s own father, who resides near the
spot, and had been in the habit of occasion
ally joining his daughter in ’ her strolls.
The husband was crest-fallen, the old man
terribly annoyed, and the wife has taken
the matter so much at heart that she has
determined on obtaining a writ of divorce
ment.
Meteorological.
Some one contends that whenever the
month of July has been unusually hot, the
following month has been correspondingly
cool. It is invariably true that the warmest
J ulys are followed by the coolest Augusts
and vice versa- If this law is followed this
year, the thermometer this month will
average only about 65 degrees, or nearly 30
degress less than for the last fortnight.
A Cure for Drunkenness.
Sulphate of iron, five grains ; peppermint
water, eleven drachms; spirit nutmeg, one
drachm ; twice a day. This preparation acts
as a tonic and stimulant, and so partially
supplies the place of the accustomed liquor,
and prevents that absolute physical and
moral prostration that follows a sudden
breaking off from the use ol stimulating
drink. It is to be taken in quantities equal
to an ordinary drain as often as the desire
for the dram returns. Any druggist can
prepare the prescription.

Strawberries.
Now is the time to begin to set out straw
berry plants. Early transplanting will insure
a better yield next season.
Solar Spots.
Spots on tlie sun have lately received more
than usual attention from astronomers. Some
Os them are very large, and it is expected
that in a day or two one of them may be
come visible to the naked eye—smoked glass
being used, of course.
Ex-Chief Justice Dupont, of Florida,

Disastrous Conflagration in Amerl
vus.—Our city was the scene of a destructive
conflagration about four o’clock this morn
ing. There seems to be much diversity of
opinion as to where and how the fire
originated, but from the lights before us we
arc led to believe that the fire was accidental,
and originated in the drug establishment of
Messrs. Simmons & Co., from thence com
municated to the grocery and tin eutablish
ment of Messrs. Mitchell Co., and then
on, until the row of wooden buildings on
Colton Avenue, adjoining the Loyless Block,
were consumed.
The following is the loss of those who
suffered by the fire, as far as we have been
able to learn :
Simmons & Co., store house, stock, and
$6,Q00 ; books and accounts about $7,000.
Insurance doubtful.
F. M. Coker, -two store rooms, about
$2,000. Insured.
Barritt and Coker, stock $2,500. No in
surance.
Jesse Stanford, stock and house, about
$5,000. Not insured.
Wheatley & Co., house and office fixtures,
about SI,OOO. No insurance.
Mitchell & Co., atoek, about $1,200. In
sured.
Samuel Pilsbury, tools and stock, between
SSOO and S6OO.
There may be inaccuracies in the above,
as the actual loss is not yet known.— Sumter
Republican, August 18.
Death or Miss Sallie O’Neals.—Our
commuriity has sustained a severe loss in 1
the death of this very estimable lady, who
departed this transitory life Tuesday, the
11th instant, in the sixty eighth year of her
age. Miss Sallie was the daughter of 1
Hugh and Nancy O’N eale, the youngest ■
sister of our late distinguished Chief J
Justice, and the last surviving member, in i
this section, of the O’Neale family.—

An Alarming Theory.—From the annual
recurrence of rains, meteoric showers, and i
the explosions of steam boilers in various ■
parts of the country, Professor Loomis sug- •
gests a very uncomfortable theory in regard
to the safety of the earth itself. He thinks
it not impossible that sufficient steam might
be generated in the burning centre of the
world to blow the whole globe to pieces. A
volcanic eruption under the sea, or near it,
like that of Vesuvius, now in progress, may
at any moment convert the earth into a large
steam boiler, by letting the water in upon
the central fires, to be followed, for aught we
know, by an explosion that shKi >-ond it
apart, and send the fragments careering
through space, as smal l planets or meteors,
each bearing off some distracted members of
the human family, to make, perchance, new
discoveries and new acquaintances in other
parts of the planetary system now revolving
with us. So that the final catastrophe may.
after all, be only a boiler explosion on a
magnificent scale of grandeur and destruc
tion.— Eclectic Magazine.
Remorse of a Duelist.—J. 8. Bessier,
who recently shot Paul E. Larcscho f Jr., in
a duel near New Orleans, writes to the
papers ot that city to describe his horror and
remorse when his opponent fell, “at seeing
one lying there with whom he had so lately
been on a friendly footing, writhing in the
agonies of death, and by bis own hand,’’ and
adds that he “begged his friends there, upon
the field, five or six times, to allow him to
go to him, clasp his hands and ask his
forgiveness."
The Jewish Messenger has an article on
the.subject of Judaism, in which it is de
clared that “the principles of the Jewish
religion are. the sime uow as they were when
first we were Commissioned to become a
‘holy nation? /Our mission was and is to’
make happy the depositories of the law, and
to bless mankind through its teachings, and
this we sts to do until the glorious period
shall arrive when throughout the whole habi
table globe the unity bf. God shall be
acknowledged.”
