Mr. B H. lIliJ. stated, in liis speech at the City Hall, on Tuesday night last, that, while at the Norlh^ recently, he mixed more freely with Radicals than Democrats; “but, as I have a very groat regard for my reputa tion here, I wish you to understand that 1 did so on the principle that in order to de tect a rogue one must mix freely with rogues.'’ Will the New York Tribune please inform us who were Mr. HiLl.’s principal associate.: whilst in that city ? Oil of Life Cures Bruises and Burns. The Way it Wortw. A gentleman informs us that a tract of land, containing one hundred and fifty acres, mar Quaker Springs', in Columbia county, was sold a few days ago at eight dollars and (illy cents per acre cash. A lew weeks ago, when the Presidential electiou was involved in doubt, the same land would not, perhaps, have brought over one-fourth that sum. We rsgret to learn that Mrs. Mary Sharkey wan accidentally shot and killed last evening by her daughter, at her store on Centre street (near the lower market), in this city. The facta, as we learn them, of this unfortunate affair are as follows: A colored in in was in the store making some purchases and was negotiating for a pis tol, with the daughter of the decease J, a girl about thirteen years of age. While ex hibiting the pistol it was accidently dis charged, the contents passing through Mrs Sharkky’s heart. Within the past twenty-five years the following named gentlemen have held the responsible and much-coveted position as Superintendent of this ntaghiffef public work, viz: Colonel Gaunett, Wm. L. Mitchell, W. 11. Stockton, E. 11. Mills, Wm. M. Wadi.iy, Jxo. W. Lewis, James F. Cooper, Campbell Wai.lack and E. Hulbert—and each in his turn, (oxeept, perhaps, Mr. Wadley), received decided opposition from the conductors of tbo party press of the State. Next to the present incumbent—Colonel Hulbert-the Ae/ abused of all these was the honest and faithfnl Dr. J. W. Lewis, who, notwith standing the predictions of the wiseacres aforesaid, paid as much or mure clear mutiny into the State’s Treasury as Was paid by all his predecessors combined. Colonel Camp bell’s administration being of 'recent date, is frequently held up by tin: opponents of the present Superintendent, as a tundel of supe rior management, while they denounce that of Colonel ifui.Bkltr us imbecile, extrava gant and corrupt. Hold up, gentlemen. Do not be too quick ou trigger. Pqlohcl Hulbert has long been intimately con nected, in a business point of view, with most of the leading railroad managers of the country. All who know him know that, as a business man, lie has Tint few superiors in the State. He is elrar-headed, jrrouipt and efficient; and we.do not hesitate lossy that he will leave the position to which Governor Bullock has placed him, with as high a reputation for efficiency and honesty as any gentleman who has preceded him. As the city is quiet to-day, 1 think it n proper time to make the above an nouncement, and to call upon the law abiding citizens to aid me hereafter in carrying out these instructions, and to that end they are earnestly requested to refrain from assembling in large bodies on the streets, to avoid exciting conversations, and olticr causes of irritation and excitement, and to pursue their ordinary vocations a® usual. The old police forces oj the city has been reorganized and ineffi cient members have been dropped from the rolls, the vacancies filled, und Gen. J. B. Steadman appointed Chief of Police, pro tcm. by the Board of Police Commissioners. Gen. Steadman and his police force will be supported by the military, and assurances are given alike, to the peaceful and the law less, that every thing at my command, and to the utmost of my ability, will be used in the endeavor to obey these instructions.— For the pres.iit, political processions, and patrolling the sti ets by armed meu, are prohibited.'
