HENEY CLEVELAND, Editor.
"he LARGEST CIRCULATION.
FRIDAY MORNING -Marob 2, 1886
Loyalty.
We have heard words “loyal” and
“loyalty” so'much used of late, that we
sometimes question whether we are in a
Republic or a Monarchy, for we have
always been accustomed to associate
the words with ideas of kings, crowns,
and thrones. But it seems to have as
sumed a signification at last which
makes it as applicable to the Democratic
as the Aristocratic form of government,
and people are “subjects,” after all, in
one as much as in the other. These old
fogy ideas about “liberty, equality and
fraternity,” for which the French people
wasted so much blood and thunder some
years ago, have, to use a modern expres
sion, “gone up the spout,” all over the
broad dqmain of the earth ; .and that
august personage, or personages—the
Government—must be respected and
obeyed, whether it be under the name of
Emperor, King, or President. We do
not pretend to say aught against this
mighty change. We ouly note the fact.
Perhaps, after all, it is best that it
should be so. Those wild chimeras
which we used to chase in the olden
time, under the startling captions,
“Popular Sovereignty 1” “The voice of
the People is the Supreme Law 1” “Po
litical and Legal Equality 1” were wont
to charm our ears, and beguile us with
phantasmagorias of Political Economy,
which never had any real tangible shape
—popular catch-words to elevate some
political trickster into place,' that he
might fatten upon the public spoils and
grow rich upon the plunder which his
office furnished. They had no real ex
istence, and they did no real good. They
led us into a war and have been whipped
out of us. • The conceited coxcombery
of our national vanity clipped, and our
foolish boastings are humbled forever.
We must now learn another lesson. We
must now learn to know that political
demagoguery does not constitute a na
tion’s greatness; that there is virtue in
other forms of government besides “ so
called ” Republic, and that that govern
ment ie the best which “ secures the
greatest good to the greatest number.”
We must learn all this, and, perhaps,
more: and dearly have we paid for these
useful lessons; but having learned it,
let us heed it, and profit by it.
To the government under which we
live, and whose broad banner waves in
triumph and in peace from the St. Lau
rence to the Rio Grande, and from the
Atlantic to the Pacific, we have sworn
allegiance. Let us give to it that more
expressive form of loyalty—our fidelity.
Faithful to the promises which we have
taken—loyal, if you please, to “the
mighty powers that be”—we must, at
last, arouse the sense of justice and
right in our conquerors, and, by our
fidelity, extort from them those rights
snd privileges which the Constitution
guarantees to every section and to every
citizen of the Union. Foreseeing these
rights and privileges, enjoying such i
rights as are guaranteed to us; es- I
chewing the vain teachings of dema
gogues and political charlatans, address
ing ourselves to the development of onr
resources, we may and must achieve a |
degree of prosperity aud grandeur for
our beloved South that will amply repay
us for the humiliation and woe which has
been heaped upon us in spite of our
more than loyalty to the government,
and fidelity to plighted faith, and accep
tance of the status which has been de
cided for us by the wager of battle.
