—The Round Table hears of a scheme
for an English opera enterprise in New
York, in which resilient artists will par
ticipate. Eichherg's "Doctor of Alen
tara” is in rehearsal for the purpose.
—A contagion has broken out in the
bee hives of certain districts in France.
A distinct sort of infusoria fastens on
the bee, and multiplies on his body with
such rapidity that death ensues in a few
hours.
—The high price of gas is driving the
people of Lynchburg, Va., to the use of
petroleum as a substitute. The rush
for lamps is so great since the rendering
of the lust month’s gas bills, that it is
with difficulty the demand can be met.
—A. S. Abell & Cos., of the Baltimore
Sun have recovered a verdict against
the Chesapeake Bank for upward of six
thousand dollars in gold, deposited four
years ngo. The bank wanted to pay
greenbacks.

rather doubtful, hut the beef was “bully.”

—Theodore Adams has brought suit
against the United States, in the Court

building of thirty-eight monitors and
eight tugs.
—Several weeks since, D. D. Hall, a
Louisville (Ky.) policeman, eloped with
the wife of a citizen, who took five thou
sand dollars of her husband's money.
Last week they returned, having spent
only five hundred dollars ; the woman
sues for forgiveness.
A special election was held in the
Marietta (Ohio) District on Saturday, to
fill the vacancy in the Ohio House of
Representatives made by the death of
Hon. A. L. Haskins. Mr. Green, the
Republican candidate, was elected by a
majority of 400, a gain of 48 over the
majority for Gov. Cox.
—There seems to be no doubt that
there will be a speedy re-organization ol
the Cabinet, in consequence of the Pres
ident’s veto. Mr. Seward, two gentle
men from the Southern States, and
either Reverdy Johnson or Senator
Cowan, of Pennsylvania, will have seats
in the new Cabinet.
