—lt is understood that Judge Coburn
will be the Repub'ican candidate for
Congress from the Indianapolis District.
—Arrangements are being made for
a speedy re opening of the Government
land offices in all the Southern States.
—-The interest on the debt of North
Carolina now due aud unprovided for

—At last accounts from St. Paul,
they were having their one-hundredth
consecutive day of good skating.
—On last St. Patrick’s day, the Mis
sissippi river at Galena was closed with
ice, so that men walked over—an event
which has not occurred since IRSR.
—There have already been <IOO balls

been attended by 400,000 people, and
the whole expenses have been $025,000.
—A Chicago firm, dealing in tobacco
and cigars, has just been convicted ol
making false income returns. The
penalties amount to nearly $20,000.
—A dry warm soil seems most favora
ble to the production of honey. White
clover, even, when it grows on low,
marshy land, has little or no honey iu it.
—The fisheries on the North Caro
lina sounds arc said to be in full opera
tion, and there are excellent prospects
of an abundant supply of herring the

one hundred and six years and seven
davs.
—The New York Tribune says that
the taxes in this country are heavier
than are or ever were borne by any
other thirty millions of people on earth.
Adding our State and municipal to our
national taxes, they amount to not a
penny less than S2O each, per annum,
for the whole American people.
—Old Deacon Sharp never told a lie,
but he used to fielate this: “He was
standing one day before a frog-pond—
we have his word for it—and saw a large
garter snake make an attempt upon an
enormous big bull frog. The snake
seized one of the frog’s hind legs, and
the frog, to be on a par with his snake
ship, caught him by the tail, and both
commenced swallowing one another,
and continued this carnivorous opera
tion until nothing was left of either of
them.’’
