Good and Better.
I A father »at hy the chimney post
f On a Winter'* day enjoying a roast i
By hit aid# a maiden young and lair,
A girl with wealth of golden hair;
And she teased the father stern and cold,
With a question of duty, trite and old:
••Say, father, what shall a maiden do
When a man of merit conies to woo?
And, father, what or this pain in my
breast;
Married or single—which is the best ?
Then the sire, to the maiden young and
fair,
The girl of the wealth of golden hair,
lie answers, as ever do fathers oold,
To the question of duty, trite and old ;
“She who weddeth keeps God’s letter j
She who weds not, doeth better.”
Then meekly answered the maiden fair,
The girl with the wealth of golden hair;
“I will keep the sense of the Holy Letter,
Content to do mil without doing letter."
Thk Jews in Europe —Great interest
is excited among the Jews in France by
the approaching election lor a chief Tab
bi of the Central Consistory at Paris—
the Jewish archbishop he is frequently
called. A Russian official papper states
that the rabbinical Jews in Russia pos
sess 615 synagogues and 2,435 oratories,
to which 5,100 religious officials are at
tached. Caraites, who are only to bo
met with in five governments, have 14
synagogues and 46 religious officials.
Os 6,336,000 souls composing the popu
lation of Portland, the Jews are above
700,000, eleven per cent of the whole.
In many of the towns the Jewish popu
lation preponderates, but few Jews are
found in the rural district.
