—Pipes for gas and water, composed
of paper, bitumenized, are used iu ali
the streets ol Paris now.
—lt was stated at the anniversaries
in London that of the subjects of the
Crown of Great Britain more than 150.-
000.1)00 are Heathen aud more than
40,000,000 Mahomedans.
—ls a person with a large family of
children o(Vends you, you may easily
obtain a delicious revenge. Give each
of his little boys a tin horn.
—The New York Times congratulates
the country on the fact that few of the
negroes know how to read, inasmuch as
they are thereby kept in blissful igno
rance of the bad udvice so liberally
tendered them. [Especially by such
such fellows as Bryant.—Pro. Pness.]
—James Littleworth, of Tennessee,
now seventy-eight years old. i.sljie father
of thirty-one children, the oldest oi
whom is fifty years, and the youngest
four months. He is living with his
fourth wife, whom lie married at the age
of fifty-nine, she being then a little
Indian squaw of fourteen.
There is in Salem a woman ninety
three ytarsof age who ones the work,
including the washing and ironing, for
n family of three men, one woman, and
two children, without assistance. She
says she always has done her own work
aud she isn't going to have a hired girl
round in the way now.
—A paper in Lafayette. Indiana, says:
•‘A new corporation culled the Lalayelte
\Yea and Wild cat National Sardine
Company has been organized. The
capital stock (S3O on the ground floor,]
has been invested in a seine. It is sup
posed to water the stock and place some
ot it on the market for suckers. The
corporate seal represents a ‘ r.-sh fish
rampant, encircled with the memorable
words, ‘All sound and sweet.’”
—ln the still celebrated eating and
drinking house, known as Romponneau,
in P iris, which- was famous iu 1705,
and is still well known, fifty quarts of
brandy a r e drank daily between five and
nine o’clock A.M.; two hundred barrels
of wine are emptied weekly, four thous
and five hundred barrels are in the
cellar, fifty servants are employed every
Sunday, when three thousand dollars
are taken at tl-e counter. The copper
in the kitchen ,s worth, estimated by
weight alone, otic thousand four bun- •
dred dollars.
—The Galveston Ecus says : “All j
the accounts from the country go to |
show that the prospects of a cotton
crop this year are becoming more and
more unfavorable every day. The
rains appear to have extended all over
the South so far as we can hear. Those
who were the most sanguine, a short
time ago, that we were going to have j
two or two and a half million bales, are j
now probably satisfied to reduce their]
estimate nearly one-half Even our j
best planters now complain that their;
crops are getting hopelessly in the grass, j
— A. fast young nobleman of Vienna,
over head and ears in debt, and famous j
for his success with the fair sex, re- j
ceived recently a perfumed rose-colored ]
note, whose contents ran thus: “Sir,
your agreeable lace and figure have
made such an impression on ine, I
earnestly desire to make your acquaint
ance. Come this evening to the Vienna
theatre. I have taken stall No. 78 in
parquette, aud I 1 ave asked the ticket
seller to keep No. 79 for a gentleman,
who would ask for it, saying ‘No. 79
for ever.’ 1 trust 1 may have lhe pleas
ure of seeing you. Emma." The dandy
dressed himself iu the most, elegant
manner, and as soon as the doors were
opened he applied for “No. 79 lor ever,”
and received it. As the curtain rose, a
gentleman came into the theatre and
took the seat. As soon as he was at
his ease, he bent over and whispeied
into the dandy's ear’s: “I am a consta
hie ; I have been hunting for you these
fifteen days gone unsuccessfully. Don’t
make a scandalous scene here, for I
tell you. I have the warrant lor your
arrest in my pocket. If you will be
quiet you may hear the opera out.’
The fast man stared wildly c ough for
a tew moments, and then, seeing re
gistauce utterly hopelese, he remained
quiet until the end of the opera, when
he followed the cuustable to the debtor's
