The SOUTHERN MEDICAL and SUII- i
GICAL JOURNAL, of Augusta, Georgia, I
was established in iS?6. by the Into Professor
Milton Antony, the illustrious founder of !
the M-dicai College of Georgia, and Has al
waya commanded the ruspt et and patronage
of ihe Pr fission, nut oniy as one of the
oldest and largest American Periodicals,
but chiefly by those valuable original coin
munieatio is, contributed by the most en i
neiit, scientific men and practitioners of the
Southern Stnto*, which have enriched its
pages during the past thirty years. The
volumes ulroady issued, embrace over pix
te«n thousand closely printed pages, con
taining more than six hundred original
eooimutiieition? from pr fessional men
throughout me Southern States, besides an
immenso number of valuabo art-cles, select*
ed from its ample list of American aud
foreign exchanges.
During the recent civil war, the publica
tion of the SOUTHERN MEDICAL AND
SURGICAL JOURNAL was necessarily sus- j
pended. At the close ol a bloody and dis- 1
astrous war, which has ended in the destruc
tion and surrender of the Southern arr ■•-?, ;
aud irf the destruction and capture ol he
archives of the Confederate Government, and
of the immense stores of medical facts and
observations accumulate by tho Medical
Officers of the Confederate Army, under the
direction of their intelligent and efficient
Surgeon General, it is believed by medical
men of »hc highest standing ir* this section
of the that it is important to escab
lish at this time a Medical Periodical of !
sufficient size to furnish ample room for tho
publication of tho valuable experience of the
Medical Officers of tho late Confederate
A ny.
it "will be the earnest effort of tho Editor
to sup ain tho former usefulness of this
Journal as a medium for the communica
tion of the and advancing doc
trines ofscienco and of all the departments
of Medicine, and of tho facts and discove
ries tending to devolop tho material pros
perity of tho South, and especially of the
valuable Medical statistics aud observations
of the recent disastrous revolution.
In view of tiie good accomplished in times i
past by the publication < *i* the SOUTHERN i

the Editor fools no he.dmtion in urging its I
claims upon its former patrons “And friends. \
The SOUTHERN MEDICAL AND SUR- j

TVTO MONTHS, commencing Ist of July,
1S(16, and each number will contain ONE
HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX PAGES
of printed matter, (octavo); the yearly
