) LARGEST CITY 01K( ILATION.
SUNDAY MORNIN G- ....■.■■■■ July h
The Volunteer's Return.
J have com* back to you,' Mother,
WeAry, Wasted, and worn ;
With looks matted over my forehead,
And clothes blood-stained and torn ;
It's no wonder you shrieked when yoU saw
me,
As if I had struck you a blow ;
I am not looking much like the fellow
You parted with three years ago !
For that one was stalwart and handsome,
Eager and fierce for the strife,
While this one is weary and wasted,
Scarred, and a cripple for life 1
Mother, God knows for the South,
I’d fight till my very last breath :
But just twenty-ono —and a cripple—
For you it had better been death.
Not for you, dear Mother, you only—
For another there was whep I left—
With eyes that were bluer than Heaven,
And lips like the ripe cherry cleft!
My Maggie she was—may God blocs her!
I meant to have made her my wife—
She had promised—but how can I ask her
To mate for a cripple for life ?
There, Mother, dop’t weep; it was cruel
To utter ono word of regret;
’Twas all I could give and gave it—
Mv right arm is left to me yet;
With that and my self-will, dear Mother,
. We’ll keep off the wolf from the door,
And if you are contented and happy,
God will help me to ask for no more.
But, hark 1 who is that 1 heard sobbing
Just then, in the chamber closo by ?
Oh ! Maggie, my love and my darling,
Kiss me once ere you bid me good-bye !
What is this—you will never forsake mo?
My loss only makes me more dear;
God bless you, dear Maggie, you’ve given
New life to your poor volunteer !
You will work for us both—are you saying ?
Nay, dear, tho’ I can’t drive the plow,
There are trades that my one arm can
master,
And I’ve courage for anything now.
With your love and Mother’s to hless me,
I’ve no room in my bosom for fears,
And may God send as bright a home
coming
to all of our brave volunteers!
