Montgomery, March 7.
Terrible Steamboat Accident.—The stcam-
■' Orline St. John, Capt. T. Menher, was
burnt to the water's edge, near Bridgeport,
Dallas county, on Tuesday evening about 5
o'clock, while on her trip from Mobile to this
city. It is supposed that about thirty persons
were drowned. The fire was accidental, and
was communicated by the heat of the boilers
to the adjacent wood work.
All the ladies on board the boat were lost.
Lieut. Rice, of the United States Army lost
$250,900. Several persons returning from
California lost their all. There was insurance
on the boat for $20,000. She was worth $40,-
ooo.
Since the above was in type, we have receiv
ed the Montgomery Atlas, from which we take
the following list of the passengers lost:
Mrs. Hall and daughter, of Augusta, Ga.,
Mrs. and Miss Vaughan, and Mrs. McCain,
S. C. Mrs. Haley, Mrs. Wright, two other
Indies and two children, names unknown
Messrs. T. B. Carson and Son, Dallas co.
Thomas Stephens, printer,' Camden, Judge
Lindsay, Mobile, Hugh Hughes, 2d mate. M
bile, Peter Upson Steward and wife, Mobile,
Second cook, two white deck hunrts and eight
negroes—some ten or twelve other cabin pus
sengers, names unknown.
Purser Price. U. S. Navy, from California
lost $250,000 in gold, Mr. Nolund lost $10,000
and several others from the same place lost
every thing they had.—Boat, cargo and bng-
gage, entirely lost. Boat insured for $20,000.
Ey* The cholera, at the last accounts, was
raging terribly at Trinity, in Louisiana, on the
Texas river. The disease was sd destructive
that hardly a patient could be saved. Flight
was the only security, and the town therefore,
was quite deserted.
twelve miles, extending out In some places a league
from the beach. In December, 1646, the New Or
leans ship Creole, from Bordeaux to the former
place, was lost here. The captain and more than for
ty passengers perished. The same Winter the Sp.
brig Zedora, Br. brigs Maid of Mona, Terpsichore
ana Achiever, were all lost within a mile of where
the Creole struck. Point Matcmillos is the starting
point for veseels running down the channel. The
dangerous passage between Ginger and Wolf Keys
on mo Imuk, and Key Confines on the Cuba Coast,
will not be feared any more, for as soon as this Is
finished the Government commences another on Key
Confines, to be Similar in all respects to] thisjon Met-

GRAND EXHIBITION !
THE long looked for painting of DANIEL In the
A LION’S DEN. covering a space of 240 square
feet has just arrived, nnd will commence exhibition
on Tuesday, the 12th inst., at the ARMORY HALL.
Tho subject of this painting is taken from’ tho 6th
chopter of Daniel, nnd the 2Bnd verse; " My God hRth
sent his angels, and. shut the lion's mouths." The
guardian Angel is represented in the picture as linv.
ing just descended to the earth—lie is spreading his
wings over Daniel as a defensive shield, to cover the
head of the kneeling saint enfolding him as in a man
tle of so’ft and celestial plumage. At the sight of the
vision, the lions shrink back with fear, or hushed hv
the voice that stillrahe raging storm, sinks down into
deep nnd subdued repose. The Prophet is depicted
in a posture of devotion, with his countenance beam
ing with love, awe and admiration.
