Enclosed is the memorandum of tlio situation of
the several shoals, rocks islands, and dangers, not laid
down in any chart or'bgtikd within my knowledge,
who priupipul part of them 1 hnvo collected from
newspapers, others have been communicated to me
by my friends, and some of them are from my own
observation. Thinking it> would be for the greater
safety of navigators to have them published togeth
er in a column of your valuable paper, I liand them
Pi you for that purpose, knowing how cheerfully
you publish any thing that will promote the good of
commerce, and the safety of the sailor.

Sir:—Captain Parsons, of the ship Amity, of Boston,
reports that on the 22d of August lout, being then
bound from Manilla to Boston, he discovered and
beat through a passage mating the Thousand Islands.

“At 6 A. M„ wind heading, stood tor Hie 1 housand
Islands; at 10 do. perceived a wide passage through
them, Blood for it. At 11 do. entered tile passage
with a boat ahead, with the second officer -m It. At
Meridian, wind came ahead, which caused us to bent

This passage, from the eastward, runs about 3 miles.

altogether. The reels which extend from these inl
ands generally run east and west, dnd can be ap
proached within a quarter of a mile. Soundings will
then be from 10 to 18 fathoms, white sand, lrom 18
fathoms, 2 boat’s length ahead, had a east ol 2 leet.
In proceeding through this passage, found the.cur-
rent in the eastern entrance to set N. VV. about If
mile per hour; but after getting in the southwestern
part found the current setting riVV by VVA VV. ‘~
miles per hour. Left 9 islands to the north ward ot
the ship, also one small island, about 4 feet above the
level of the seu, with three, remarkable trees upon it,
two of which are upon the ends, tlio other in the
centre of the island. This island is seen before enter
ing the passage from the eastward, and is to he leit
oil the starboard hand. After getting through, sa w the

Dover, Eng., Jan. 15.—“The masters of vessels
coming from the westward, and bound to the Thames
and Medway, arp subject to heavy penalties it they do
not hoist the usual pigual for n pilot on arriving ott
Dungeness, mid keep it displayed until tlie ship has
passed the South Buoy of thq Brake, unless in tlie
meantime a duly quahtted Cinque Ports pilot should
have come on hoard. Masters are particularly wai*u-
ed to keep their jacks flying, although they may have
taken a boatman on hoard, and engaged his boat und
crew to procure a pilot from tlie shore. The pilot
cutters show a large green light during the uight, mid
display a flare up every 15 minutes.
*VN. B.—There are now no licensed boatmen ; their
licenses have been long since revoked, and the act au
thorising their being* granted repealed. Masters
should avoid being impvtwdupon by.any persons pre
tending to have licenses. * .

time, on the first of May. I believe it is the highest
in America, being 186 Spanish feet (or 171 Lug.) m
height, costing nearly $200,0«0 when finished.
The lamp and machinery to he used arc French, aqd
were exhibited »\t the Into Fair in Pans. H is now
being placed by a Frqpeli engineer. The whole struc
ture Is under the superintendence of Don Juan t om-
puzuno, Lieutenant-Colonel',of the Royal Corps ot
Engineera? It' is to he called ‘Colon,’ the name
being nlnded’in large bronze letters, facing the sea,
about Itujf-way up tne tower, so as to ho seen soma
distance*. The lighthouse will be of great, utility to
