IBuffaio Com. Mi).
“When off the Mexican co*, we ha<ft4fo»
view of that natural, but imperfectly under
stood phenomenon—a Water spoyt—Which, in
several respects, was new, evea to the old ex
perienced seamen on boardr It was a clear,
warm morning, with Variabla breeds, that
scarcely ruffled the surface of the ocean. At a
distanco of about one hundred rods to the West
ward, suddenly, thdro was a disturbing of the
smooth water—within an area of perhaps an
hundred feet, ft at first boiled and foamed, then
a spray or vapor arose from the turmoil, wlfieh
had soon a focus in its centre, hrouttd which i|
whirled in a spiral form, upward^, as we often
see duet, and other light substances of the
earth, in the incipient stage of a Whiriwthd.
It rote rapidly to the Height of throe or four
hundred feet, almost perpendicular, then iWay-
ed off and after forming a graceful chrvfe/‘as
sumed against* almost perpendichlar position,
until it pierced a light, fleefey Cloud. Its En
tire height seemed to us from 500 to 000'fobt.
As the column of vapor ascended; it* base
upon the ocean enlarged, until itassumed a con
ical form throughout its whole extent. When
it touched the cloud, quick almost as an elec
tric, flash, the vapor disappeared', and We
hod the sublime spectacle of a gigantic Column
of clear, blue water—its base'upon the sea, find
its apex in the clouds ! • v ‘
“The whole mighty phenomenon was noise-
less ; no other sound than tho gentle ones at
the waves as they broke before th« bows hf our
ship, disturbed tlm stillness of the scene. ’ The
vast column swayed and undulated with foe
wind, us if it had been a huge sea aeqpcnt foot
was stretched from the ocean to' the' clouds!
Its entire duration was from fifteentto twenty
minutes, when it seemed to have performed its
office, its surplus water settling down into the
ocean, or rather again assuming (the^vapor, com
mencing at itBconnection with the cloud. The
cloud that it pierced was at firm of a light color,
as I have before observed. As it began tb fill
from the (nighty oonduit that haditoWbfed up ta
it, it grew dense and black, as if gorged find
surfeited from its vast reservoir!
In the afternoon we had adrenching showat.
at if the surcharged cloud was returning back
to the ocean the contribution it had levied in the
morning. > t
We saw other Water .ftpouts in oqr voyage,
but none that deserved mentioning, 'aftffr wit
nessing the one I have attempod to .describe.”

An Incident.—During the last war-wiilrGreat
Britain u tremendous struggle was made by
both parties to preserve tbe naval supremacy of
Lake Champlain. Com. McDonough, who
commanded the American fleet, determined to
risk the general engagement. So confident
were the British subjects of success that a small .
vessel loaded with British '.object, came into tho
bay where the battle was fought,as spectators to
witness the prostration of the “Star-Spangled
Banner.” The action ivns commenced by the
British vessels firing a broadside. At that in
stant, says the historian, a chicken cock, which
had escaped from one of the cotips on McDon
ough’s vessel, flev upon one of the guns and
by a loud crow seemed to hurl back a defiance
at the hungry foe. The instant this\W»» heart!
the whole body of soldiers, officers find' fill
greeted the gallant bird with three cheers.
Sailors are naturally superstitious'.; and Mr.
Cooper in his Naval History, says the crowing
of the fowl, had a powerful efllfet upon the
known tendencies of the sgfonen. During the
battle the chicken cock flew upon foe rigging,
and from there, far above the heads of the
combatants, could be heard between the pauses
of the fearless fight foe war cry of foot gal
lant and fearless bird.
