MORNING NEWS.
Lake Ponchautrain.—The striking change
that has taken pluoeiu Lake Pontuhurtrain since
the breaking through of the Bonnet Carre
crevasse is not generally known, or observ. d
even by many who have crossed it on the mail
boats. The crevasse is about two miles wide,
eight feet deep and some thirty miles long.
An immense volume is constantly discharging
through this gap and has di-colored the entire
body of v.a.er in the lake. One effect already is
the destruction of the oysters contiguous to the
shores, and the disciples of Irak Walton arc in
distress lest the freshness thus produced should
drive away or kill the fine suit-water fish that
have hitherto despoiled in the briny waves ot
the little inland seu.
Since the opening of, the crevasse, the wa
ters of the lake have remained eighteen or
twenty inches above the former level, and
from its debouch a current sets to the east, ac
quiring considerable force within a few miles
ol the Rigolets. VVe have been told by sailing
masters that the velocity is three or four miles
an hour- The water at the mouth of the cre
vasse rushes with great force from the Missis
sippi—sucking in floating timber, rafts, boats,
&c. Au extensive swamp intervening, how
ever, deadens the force of the cuirent before
catering the lnke. The opi i m is outnrmi nod
I by many that a permanent connexion will thus
humiide between the river and lake. Were
it left open, however, we think it doubtful
whether a channel of sufficient depth fur steam-
bnat navigation would be cut nut. The bottom
| of the lake is shallow and shelving, so much so
i to oppose in the present condition of things
| u free passage in or out, though we are informed
that persons think the force of the stream suffi-
| cientto hollow out in time a deep channel.—

Phenomena of the Haiti.—Dr. Wngnn in a
trntise on the *• Quality of the Mind,” makes
tlm following remarks:
‘One of the most inconceivable things in the
nnture of the bruin is, that the organ of sensa
tion should itself bo insensible. To' cut the
brutn gives no pain, yet in the bruin alone re
sides the power of loefing puin in any other part
ol the body. If the nerve which lcatls from it
tu tho injured part lie divided, it becomes in
stantly unconscious of stiffiei ing. It is only hv
communication with the bruin that any kind
of sensation is produced, yet the organ itself is
insensible. But there is a circumstance more
'Junderful still. The brain itselfmay lie removed
may he cut away down to the corpus cabisttm
—without destroying life. The animal lives
and performs all the functions which are ne
cessary to simple vitality, but no longer hits ti
mind. It, cannot feel or think. It requires
that tho food should lie pushedinto the stomach;
once there, it is digested, and the animal will
ever thrive and grow fat. We infer, therefore,
that the’part of the Inuiii, the convolutions, is
simply intended for the exercise of the intel-
'T’twil faculties, whether of the low degree
milled instinct, or the exnlied kind bestowed on
mnn, the sift of reason."

TEA CULTIVATION IN THE U. STATES.
H AVING received a small supply o^ TEA NUTS,
collected at great expense of money and labor,
in the middle districts of China, from the most cele
brated Tea Plantations of tlie Empire, I am prepnred
to fulfil my engagements by accommodating tlie pub
lic with a share of the Nuts received. My main ob
ject is to plant and cultivate; but as I ain quite cer
tain that 1 have obtained, after the labor of three
years, tlie best quality of Tea Nuts, I am disposed to
meet the wishes of the public, and to share them
with others.—Tea Nuts gathered in the neighborhood
of Canton are scarcely worth cultivating, on account
of the interior quality of the Ten. It ia obviously the
interest of the planter to submit to an increased ex
pense, to secure a superior quality of Tea Nut, in es
tablishing u Tea Plantation, whether large or small.
In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in
fact acting ns an agent for the benefit of the public.
Neither the State, the imblic, or any individual, has
ever extended to me the aid of a single cent.
For convenience and security, the Nuts will be
packed in tin boxes, and forwarded from Greenville,
S. C-, by such conveyance and to such address as the
purchaser may direct, to any part of the U. States.
TEA PLANTS—now on their passage from Chinn,
selected with a single eye to quality, by a gentleman
of large experience in horticultural pursuits, and p r-
baps better acquainted with the character of the Ten
Plant, than afcy person in Europe or America—will
also be shared with those desirous of obtaining a
small supply.
A specification of the soil bestailapted tothe^rowth
of the plant, the mode of planting, cultivating, Ac.
Ac., will accompany each parcel.
Application ahould be mado (post-paid) to the sub
scriber.
