The Assyrian Discoveries.
Theantequities at Nineveh are placed, by late ar.
inunts. at a mure moderate epoch than tnat fixed by
Mr. Layard. Major Rawlinson thinks they do not
ucend beyond 13 or 12 hundred years before the
Christian era, because, in the earliest inscriptions on
the walls, references arc made to Tyre, Sidtm and
olh"rcities, which wer not founded more than fit 1
pen centuries before Christ. He alsu considers Egypt
and not Syria, as the criid’e of huniuti civilization.—
It cannot be doubted t hat the Assyrian Monuments
pirtake largely of the Egyptian type, and also tils'
eren tlie oldest palaces in Assyria are of more mod’
ermlatc than the pyramids j hut this does not seem
to us to be at u'l conclusive in favor of Major Raw
linsona view. May not both Assyria and Egypt, as
it present known to us, be the children of an earlier
vilizntion every vpstige of which has disappeared
except wlial we nee in its progeny ? The points o*
resemblance between the Euphratan and Nilotic mon
umcnU favor this hypothesis, rather than the ordina
ry ides; he one is but a c ipy from the other. vVe
believe, In a word, that there was more thun one cy
cle of civilization in Mesopotamia, before that whose
fossil relics Layard has disentombed.
Ixdusa Convention.—Homestead Exemption and
Women* Property.—Tho exemption section, alter
njmyinefii'Ctua'nttempts team :ud its phraseology,
finally passed on Wednesday—ayes 103. nocs 18. It
it as follows :
The privilege of the debtor to enjoy Ihe neccssa
rj comforts of life shall lie recognised by wholesome
lavs exempting a reasonable amount of property
bom seizure or sale, for the payment of uuy debt or
liability hereafter contracted.”
IVomen's rights, after considerable debate, passed
in Ihe exact language of Mr- Blythe's section—ayes
i, lines 56. as follows :
'The real an-i personal property of woman, whrth-
ft owned before marriage or afterword, acquired
by purchase or gift, (other than fiom the husband in
fraud of his creditors,J devise, or descent, shall be
m.l remain secured, under equitable conditions by
