Th Remains of James the Second.—The fol
lowing curious account, says a writer in the Notes
sad Queries, was given to me by Mr. Fitz-iinun*, an
Irish gentleman upwards of eighty y ars of age, with
whom 1 became acquainted when resident with my
lumpy eq Toulouse, in deptem a-r, 1840; he uavlng
resided ill that city lor many years as a teacher ol
the 1-'reach anil English lauguag -s, and had attended
tile late dir Wilhain Pullet in the former capacity
there in the y. at- 18 7. He said :
I was a prisoner ill Paris, in the Convent of the
English Benedictines, in the Rule dt. Jacques, du
riug part of the Revolution, lu the year 1793 or
1794 the body cl King Jam -s II. of England was in
one of the i-hapels there—where it iiHd been depos
ited sums tini-under the expecthtiou that it would
one day be sent to England fo.- interim nt in West
minster Abbey. It had never been buried. The
body was in a wooden Collin, euclooed in a leaden
one, and that again enclosed in u second wooden one,
covered with black velvet. While l was a prisoner,
tlic sous calottes broke open the coffins to get nt the
it-itd to cast into bullets, i ho body lay exposed a
whole day. It was smi idh d likea mummy, hound
tight with gaiters. The sans culottes look out the
body, which ha I been embalmed. There was a strong
smell of vinegar and camphor. The corpse was
lienutitul and perfect, the hands uud nulls were very
line. 1 moved and bent every Huger 1 never saw
»- Hue a ant t.f teeth in my life. A young lady, a tel-
low prisoner, wished much to have a tooth ! 1 tried
to get une out lor her, hut coul-1 not, they were so
firmly fixed The feet also were beautiful. The
face and cheeks were Ju-t as if lie were alive. 1 roll
ed his eye; ibe eyeballs were perfectly firm under
my finger.
Tile French un.i English prisoners gave money to
the sans culottes for showing the body. Tiny said
he was n good sans culotle, mid they were go
ing to put him into a hole in the public church-} ai d,
like otiter Balls eulotte-, and he was carried away—
but where th“ body was thrown I never hoard. King
George IV. tried all iuhispow r to got lidmgs of the
body, hutcould not. Around the chapel wet'. sever
al wax moulds of the face hung, up made prubably
at the time ot the King’s do.itn, auj the corpse was
v-i-y like them. The body bud been originally kept
at the Place of dr. Jermaine, whence it was brought
to the Convent ol the Benedictines. Mi . Porter, toe
prior, wusw prisoner at the time in his own convent.
Th ' Te*as Indians The Houston (TeXu-) Tel
egraph columns sum i interesting news concerning
the Iinliuus, derived from Mr. Geo Burnurd, wim
h«d just come in Iroui his trading house ut the Ca-
Blanche Peak. .
A large number of Indians have lately visited the
tra ing house, uud professed the warmest friendship
lor the whites. They object, to meet tile liniiau
Agent, Judge Rollins, at the cuuncil proposed by
bun uu the Llano, us they fcuf the people m that sec
tion arc not frit udiy to them. But a very amal I por
tion of the tribe wi I attend the couucil Coteinseh,
•’ayayuca. Yellow Wolf, and other leading chiefs de
clare that their people would readily attend a coun
cil on tue Brazos, hut they fear bad white men will
aback.them as they attacked the Lipaiis on 'the dun
‘haha, it they attutid the council on the Llano. They
8 »y the Northern bauds lately committed depreda
tions tbere, mid the whit' people cannuf be iriondjy
to the Indians. The Tonkevvays are now tit war
with both rhe Wacoes and VVichltaws. .Since .lie
latter were defeated in the Wjchitiiw mountain . the
Wacoes have formed an alUeitce with til til against
•he Toukcwiiys. A few weeks since a par y ol Ton
keways met a party of Wacoes on the Bed Fork ol
the Brazos, and d>'touted them with the loss of four-
'•mil warriors. Only two or three of the Tutike-
w ais were killed. Mr, Barnard snvs the Took’’-
ways eat the hands and arms ol the Wucoes they aid
ed. Till, Tonkevvays and Cnrancubuas are tho only
tribes of Texas that are regard'd as ciuiibals. The
other tribes seem to hold them in tho utmost detest
ation,
The following gives us some more information
concerning ihe recent movements ot Wild cat, the
hotel Seminole chief: , ,
Mr. Barnard informs us that Wild Cat, the Seuiluole
Chief, crossed the Brazos some distance above the
trading house a lew wiv-fcs mice, on his way liken
Arkansas to Mexico, with a large body of runaway
degrees, and about twenty-five warriors. He had in
duced the negroes to run nWHy ti'olii their Indian
owners in the Creek and Bern.nolo reservations in
■Arkansas. Boon after Wild Cut hud passed the Bra
2 .°s, Hti agent from Mr. Duval, the Indian agent, ar-
rived and endeavored to pei'piiadh the people on ihe
Gentler to puriluw Wild Cat, offering a reward ut
“tty ddliur- tor each ol the negroes they would cap
ture. The wily chief, however, had probably reach
ed the Rio Grande before pursuit could hems o. It
Was reported on the frontier that the uuinlier oi ne-
groes that accompanied Wild Cat, wheo be first start
ed from Arkansas, was two hundred, hut sixty were
recovered near the eastern border of the State. It is
•upposed th -t Wild Cat intends to establish a colony
ot tree negroes in the Mexican territory, below tue
* residio Rio Grande.
