THE MORNING NEWS.
[Correspondence of tie Daily Morning News.)
NEW-YORK, DEC. 9th, 1850.
The Union committee of safety have got up anoth
er reception to-day, to glorify Senators Dennis and
Foote. A greet number of persons waited upon
them in the Governors Room, end an hour or two
puied very plesantly, in shaking of bends; mutual
congratulations, Union speeches, Ac. These ming-
ol' the Northern and Southern elements are
very commendable, and should be encouraged ; the
reiult can scarcely fail to be beneficial. I think, that
say means, likely to harmonize the discordant
feelings that now,to a certain extent, unhappily exist,
should be warmly promoted. The speeches of the
too Senators were highly patriotic, and elicited greet
■pplause.
We are to have a great meeting at the Tabernacle
to-night, as an antidote to the lecture of Bishop
Hughes, on the decline of protestantism. The object
of this meeting id to devise a plan to promote the
truth among the Catholic population. Several clergy-
men of different denominations will deliver addresses.
The Cethu ies.may probably think that, however lau
dable the intention may be, the truth might be profi
tably promoted in tbeir own Beets. What is truth !;
is, however, a question somewhat difficult to solve
particularly when certain tenets are dragged into the
controjersy..
Opera-dorn is very indignant at the cavalier treat,
mont of Signor .Bellini, the Italian singer, that Mr
Maretzalt caught on his way to Havana. The first
night he broke down after singing one uct of Lucia
di Lammermoor; and on Saturday night he refused
losing at all. At 2 o’clock in the afternoon he pro
mised faithfully to Ire at the theatre; but on being called
open at 5 o'clock, he was discovered in bed, and re-
tused positively; although it was, then too late to
mike the announcement, and those who were at
tracted to the.Opera House, were informed as they
entered, that the performances ware changed. 1
don t think Mr. Bellini had better appear in New-
York, for some time 1 although the public are very
indulgent to the caprices of *u ch gentry.
TheForost affair was again before the Supreme
Court on Saturday, on a motion to discharge the in
juoction against Mr. Forrrest, restraining him from
proceeding with his prosecution in Pennsylvania.
I thought all difficulty in that respect had been remov
ed. The motion was postponed at the request of the
lady’s counsel, with the understanding that it might
be called up next Saturday.
Hearn by telegraph to-day, that the Erie Canal
is frozen at several points, and that navigation is
closed for the season. Tnalate rains and fogs have
been succeeded by sharp biting winds, and snow I hear
bas fallen in considerable quantities all around us-
'Ve anticipate great sleighing this season, and plenty
of it. Broadway, at such a time, presents a most
remarkable and animated scene; worth travelling
Mina distance to witness. The public conveyances
•be real democratic six-penny rides otfor the most
Inn; indeed lean perceive very little of that ingredi
ent in a solitary rush over the snow, in a little outter,
relieved by occasional lmbibings of hot whiskey punch
TheClty census is completed with the exception
of three wards, and allowing an average increase
in them, we may estimate the population of Now
York at present, at, about 502,000. The expenses i>f
Ihe City Government are increasing at a fearful ratio;
•be total amount to bo levied for the next- fiscal yoar
h 83,093,77, being an increase over this year of
$W0 307 9.1. The rates, however, are not expected
•o be increased In consequence, as by the new system
°i assessment the amount of real and personal estate
n much larger than ever.
There is little doing in the way of business, among
importers, jobbers, &c. The stock of foreign goods
io the city at present, is said to bo much larger than
usual. The value of imports for the month of No-
ftmber, appears to be as follows: dutiable goods $7/
*8.805; free do. $116,191, specie and bull on, $13,
580; cash duties $1,885,264,12. Total $9,393, 640,12'
The report for the same period were—American
~ooda®3,677,657; free foreign $36,623; dutiable $676,-
86 ' specie and bullion$905,394. Total $53,297,470.
There appears to bo a rush from California Just now,
•mi indeed private letters give a sad picture of affairs
•here, the Cholera having appeared will Increase the
departures considerably, for with such ai population,
'here is every probability of the epidemic mak ! ng
J feadful ravages. I am told that there are many
Poor wretches in Calitornia who have not the means
“i returning, and that at the departure of the steamers
r °m San Francisco, the scenes that take place at the
*harf, are painful in the extreme.
A dreadful occurrence took place at Rathburns Ho- j
^ yesterday. A boarder named D. F. Grey,being
:r szv, walked out of a window in the fifth story and
picked up on the sidewalk in Broadway, frigyv

The Late John McDonooh’i Will.—Yesterday
says the N. O. Delta of the 5th Inst., the Hon. Isaac
Johnson, Attorney General of the State, with whom
are associated Messrs. Giimore and King, filed a pe
tition in the fifth District Court—Judge Buchanen
—in behalf of the State of Louisiana, praying that tbs
bequests of the late John McDonogh, except those
having reference to hie relatives and slaves, bo de
clared null and void, inasmuch as the seme ere ille
gal and contrary to public policy; and that, therefore,
with exceptions aforesaid, the estate revert so the
use and benefit of the states of Louisiana and Mary
land, as by the will expressly provided.
It is, perhaps, fortunate for the State that* sum
mary issue will be thus arrived at instead of be-,
ing thrown into chancery in the United States
Court, where it might have remained for ten or twelve
years.
The statement which has beeu extensively
copied into the newspapers that the astronomers of
Cambridge hure discovered a third ring to the plan
et Saturn, iscorrected by au astronomical writer in
the Buffalo Express. He eaye that this is the first ob
servation made of the third ring in this country; and'
that it has not probably been ever observed in Eng
land, in consequence of the scraclty of good teles
copes in that country. In fact, however, he says
that the discovery, not only of a third ring in addition
to the |two first discovered and largest, but ot four
newoees making six altogether, was made in France
twelve years ago, by Mr. Decreppis. and published by
order of the French Academy of Sciences in Septem
ber, 1838. A translation of the report is published, in
which the particulars of the discovery are minutely
stated and various elements of the newly discovered
rings calculated and the tables given.
There are in this country several telescopes said
to be superlorto those in England, and observers of
great skill sud science. One of them has already
found the third of these rings, and attention being
drawn to the subject we may expect soon to hear of
thefinding of the fourth, fifth and sixth.
The Internal Commbhce of the Country.—
The aggregate value of the Lake trade, as appears by
returns made at the bureau of Topographical Engin
eers, amounts to the enormous sum of $186,485,269 I
or move by $40,000,000, than the whole Foreign ex
port trade of the couutry. The aggregate t mnage is
203,041 tons, of which 35,904 is foreign. The net val
ue of the commerce of the western rivers is $256,.
233,820, the value of vessels $18,661,500. The groes
value of the internal commerce of the United States
which is almost double that of the net value, is $795,
654,774.
The Prussian Army.— The regular forces, always
under arms in Prussia, amount to 120,000 men. Be
sides these, there are called out for drill every year,
98,000 of the landwehr, or militia, and by calling in
the war reserves for the regular forces, and all the
landuchr reserves, Prussia can have 550,000 fighting
men in arms in three weeks. In Prussia every body
is obliged to serve three years in the army. Every
citizen is, therefore, educated for a soldier, and in
anemergency, an,immense diwiplhied .force can be
collected for the defends of the country, agaiftst for
eign aggression. The peace establishment of Prussia
Is maintained at un annual expense of fifteen millions
of dollars.
