TI1K I’KOOHKSH OP TIIK WAR.
The Herald says ediloriallf :
The repulse ol Admiral Dupont’s ironclad
fi.-et at Charleston Indefinitely postpones, we
siispeet, the resumption of active operations
against that rebel stronghold. The uoor will
doubtless be kept more closely guarded than
heretofore against English blockade runners,
wilh their “aid and comfort to the enemy;” hut,
us the sickly summer season In a few weeks will
r* visit tjie South Carolina seaboard, we eon-
elude that nothing but some overwhelming
Union successes in other quarters will secure
ihe capture ot Charleston before the return of
the mainia killing frosts ot autumn. Indued,
it is broadly hinted iu a leading abolition jour
nal that the idea ol a crushing spring cum
puign has been abandoned at Washington, and
that probably our military operations, until the
end ot the summer, will bo limited to pegging
a little here uud pegging a Utile there, us the
occasion may Invite or demand.
The failure at Charleston, together with the
failure at Vicksburg to gain any decisive ad
vantage over the eueuiy, has, at all cvculs, pul
au end to the late confident expectations ol the
country in regard to a vigorous uud decisive
prosecution of the war.
TUF. FIGHT AT CHARLESTON.

with some ol their best orduauce. 'I he artillery
