The Richmond Examiner has received u
batch of Norl'icru papers, brought up by the
flag of mice. The dales are complete to the
lOlh instant. We gel up the following autu-
rnaiy of news:
VKOM THE ARMY IN TUB SOUTHWEST.
The news from the army In the Rout A west is
citing. Dispatches from Vicksburg Blale
that the town of Jackson and Yazoo City are in
the hands ot General Hbcrinau alter a slight
skirmish. Generals llurlbui and McPhersou
look possession of JackROu, while- Yukoo City
was occupied by Col. Coates, after a Fliort fliht
at Bartilln. A dispatch from Nashville says :
Gen. Htiermau eulered Jackson, MlasLsippi,
on the - r »th iuft. i be enemy oflered but little
eslstaiicc, aud were supposed to be falling
back over Pearl river, it was believed that the
rebels were being rciulorced from Dulton. At
the light at Sarlitlu, the steamer Platte Vulley
and Ibe other transports and gunboats with
Porter aud Sherman’s expedition were attucked
tys force ol three thousand Texans, who with
artillery and musketry, fired into the transports,
wouudlng six soldiers. A fight ensued, in
which a portion of our infantry and the guti
boats participated, aud which resulted iudis-
lodging and driving the enemy with what loss
is unknown. Eight of our men were killed nnd
thirty woouded. The El'eventb Illinois volun
teers, with negro cavalry uud infantry, were en
gaged lu the affair.
Dispatches from Tenuessee report movements
ol the army there, and a design to flank Gen.
Johnston. A dispatch from Chattanooga BAys :
Gen. Gogun left Huntsville, Ala., some days
ago, with the FUtucuth army corps, lo act in
conjuctlou with Gen. Sherman.
The cavalry expedition under Griersou and
Smith crossed the country from Corinth, mov-
g southwardly.
It is understood that these columns are in
tended to act in conjuctlou—the one to at
tack, and the other to cut off Polk’s retreat
and disperse the cavalry of Forrest, reported
as t-cotiring Central and Northern Mississippi.
There is no reason to doubt, though beyoud
this enterprise the combinations are merely
conjectural, but that a great flank movement of
lohuston's army Is inteuded.
Pbc irmy at Chattanooga is by this lime in
motion foi Tunnel Hill aud Dalton, its move
ments tuny have been delayed by circumstances
unknown lo ns, but is under marching orders
