PUBLIC notice is hereby given, in pursuance of the
ait of Congress puffed on the 6th day of July 1797,
entitled, u An Act laying “Duties on Stamped Vellum,
Parchment, and Piper,” and the aft passed on the 15 th day
of December 1797, entitled, <k An Aft to postpone for a
limited Time the Commencement of the Duties imposed by
the Aft, entitled, An Aft laying Duties on Stamped Vel
lum, Parchment, and Paper,” That, from and after the
iff day of July -ensuing, the several Stamped Duties here
after enumerated will be levied and cblleAed throughout
the United States.
I. For every (kin or piece of vellum or parchment, or
(beet or piece of paper, upon which lhail be written or
printed any or either of the instruments or writings follow
ing, to wit:
Any certificate of naturalization, 5 1 dollars. .
Any licenie to praAife, or certificate of the admiifioa,
enrolment, or registry, of any couniellor, solicitor, attor
ney, advocate, or proAor, in any court of the United
States, 10 dollars . Provided, that a certificate in any
one of the courts of the United States for one of the (aid
offices (hall,, so far as relates to the payment of the duty
aforefaid, be a fufficient admiflion in all the courts of the
United States for each and every of the said offices.
Any grant or letters patent under the foal or authority
of the United States,-{except for lands granted for military
fervicesy 4 dollars .
Any exemplification or certified copy of any such grant
or letters patent, (except for lands granted for military
services) 2 dollars.
Any charter party, bottomry, or reljwndentia bond, 1
dollar .’ ~
Any receipt or other difeharge for or on account of any
legacy left by any will or other ttftamentaiy instrument, or
for any (hare or part of a personal estate uivided by force
of any statute of distributions, other than to the wife, chil
dren, or grandchildren, of the person deceased, the amount
whereof lhail be above the value of 50 dollars, and (hall
not exceed the value of too dollars, 25 cents .
When the amount thereof (hall exceed the value of 100
dollars, and ihali not exceed 500 dollars, 50 cents.
And for every further lum of 500 dollars the additional
sum of 1 dollar.
Any policy of insurance, or iaftruinent in nature there
of', on any Ihip, vessel, or goods, ini'ured from one diltriA
to another in the United States, 25 cents.
From tlie United States to any‘foreign port or place,
whim the sum for which insurance is made (hall not exceed

Any exemplification, of what nature soever, that (hall

Any bond, bill single or penal, foreign or inland bill of
exchange, promissory note or other note, other than any
recognizance, bill, bond, or other, obligation or contract
made to or with the United States, or any date, or for
their use refpedtivelys
If above 20 dollars, and not exceeding 100 dollars, 10

If above too dollars, and not exceeding 500 dollars,
25 cents.
If above 500 and not exceeding 1000 dollars, 50 cents.
And if above 1000 dollars, 75 cents.
Provided, that if any bonds or notes Dial! be payable at
or within fuch bonds or notes (hall be fubjedt to
only two fifthparts of the duty aforelaid, viz.
If above 20 dollars, ana not exceeding 100 dollars, 4
cents.
If above 100 dollars,- and not exceeding 500 dollars,
10 cents.
If above 500 dollars, and not exceeding 1000 dollars,

If above 1000 dollars, 30 cents. .
Any notes issued by the Banks now established, or that
may hereafter be established, within the United States, o
ther than the notes of such of the said Banks as (hall agree
to an annual composition ol one per centum on the annual
dividends made by such Banks to their ftockholdere respec
tively, according to the following scale:
On all notes not exceeding 50 dollars, for each dollar,
6 mills.
On all notes above 50 dollars, and not exceeding 100
dollars, 50 cents.
On all notes above one hundred dollars, and not exceed
ing 50a dollars, 1 dollar .
Cfo all notes above 500 dollars, 2 dollars .
Any protest or other notarial act, 25 cents.
Any letter of attorney, except for an invalid pension,
or to obtain or fell warrants for land granted by the United
States as bounty for military services performed in the late
war, 25 cents .
Any certificate or debenture for drawback of customs or
duties for less than 500 dollars, 1 dollar.
For 500 dollars, and Act exceeding 2000 dollars, 2
dollars. __ >
For more than 2000 dollars, 3 dollars . 7T 7
Any note or bill of lading for goods or merchandise to
be exported;
If from one diftriA to another diftrift of the United
States, not being ]n the feme date, 10 cents.
If trom the United States to any foreign port or place,

Any mttntary or catalogue of any furniture, goods, or
effects, made in any case retired by law, (except in cases
of goods and chattels diftrained for rent or and goods
(4 dollars per ann.)

11. The duties aforefrid wHI be collcAed and idceivrfd
,by the (upervifors, infpe&ors, and (rthfcr officers of ihlpec
tion, in the several diftriAs, surveys, and dKifions, of the
United States, and by fech other persons as (hall from time
to time be specially appointed *nd employed by the taper
vifors of diftri&s for that purpose.
111. The fupervifoi* of the several diftri&s will, prior
to tlje Ift day of July ensuing, and as feon as may be prac
ticable, mark or stamp, without fee or reward, any quan
tities or parcels of vellum, parchment, or “paper, with any
of the rates of duties before enumerated, on payment of the
said duties; or damped vellum, parchment, and paper,
may,* at the option of the citizens of the United States, be
obtained at the rates preferibed by law, by application to
any supervisor, irifpeAor, officer of infpettion, or other
person appointed for the distribution of damps by the super
visors of diftrkfts.

I. The stamp duties on debentures or certificates for
the drawback of customs or duties on imports are repealed.
11. A difeount at the rate of seven and one balf pKr
centum will be allowed by the supervisors or infpeAors

venue, who may purchase at one time, or procure ’ td bt
(lamped, any quantities of vellum, parchment, or papen,
upon which the duties (hall amount to ten dollars or up.

Ill; Stamped paper will be provided, and fold at the
rates preferibed by law, without any additional charge or
expence 6n account of the price of paper; but for (lamped
parchment or vellum an additional psaft will be demanded -
at tfie rate of 50 cents for each (kin of parchment, or 20b
cents for eachfkm of vellum, of mediaih fizte, Which may
be formfeed at the expence of the United States, and pro
portionally for any lesser quantity.
