A? I have not delivered mv letter I have this moment

Englilh colors h&ifted above the French.”
The following paragraphs are taken from papers with
which we were favored by Capt. Goodrich.
B feterre, ( St. Gbriftopbcr's) February 12.
The American frigate Gonfteliation, Capt. Tr. xton, ar

On Tue Hay last the American frigate Conidelfotion, of
,3 g'ins. Com mo.lore Trnxton, brought in the French fri
gate L’lnfurg-nte, of 40 guns, Cipt. which she
enntured on ‘he 9th inst. df the foutb file of this blind.—
Ti.e following are the particulars of the a&ion, with which
Ve were this day fivered:
On the 9th instant- at noon, a large ship was difoovered
bv the Ocnftel ration {landing to the westward, to which fl.e
innudi'.tJ.v g ive chafe; md at firft the Commodore, fi:p
pofmg. her to be a Brit'th’ftiip of v/ar, ordered the fignaT
for that day to be hoisted, which not being answered, ihe
th.-n direfted ri.e figna’l for an American ship of war to be
dilfoye i, which also was not noticed, but the American
infign run no at the mi -eo ix-ak of die chafe.
As neither of the above. Jlgnrds were answered, the
Commodore observed that be iultcbed the chafe to be an
enemy; and scarcely had exo'-efied his opinion, wlien the
American ensign was hauled-d-v./n, the national fi.-g hoist--

cleared-and the /hip put before the wind. At a -quarter past
3, Nevis bearing w. s. w. about 6 leugucs diltant, the
Constellation ranged up don glide of her, when the Captain
hailed foveral times, but Commodore Trnxton thought
proper to anfo.er him only with his guns, and as soon as
they were br. ught to bear coipmcnced the engagement, bv
giving the firft broad-fide, which v/as instantly returned by
the Frenchman; buc in .he ccnrfe of one hour and a quarter
fi-.e struck Her colors, after being r.-.kM fore and aft three
times, with the loss of 70 cf her men killed and wounded,
ir.d ve-y much shattered in her hull, marts, rigging, and
fails. She rr ves to be L’lnfurgente French frig-ite, of 40
ju ;s and 360 men, exclufi .e of officers, commanded by
Citizen P. irermr, and is one of the {hips lately arrived at
Gnadalc ujie from France.
The Con foliation had only 1 man killed and 3 wounded,
though much injured inker rigging and fails, &c. aloft.
Her Commander observes that his office is and men behaved
extremely w.-|l, and nor. one single instance occurred cf a
want of exer- icn and nnmiefson the occasion; fne had -07
men. including ‘.filters.
A cartel faded yefterdav evening for Guadaloupe with
about 60 of the crew of L’lnfurgente.
