THK SILENT EVE.
The shailes ofmght are hastening down,
Tn sleep in him: the mountain't crown ;
The sky i# cloudless amt serene ;
The ivifliliare pillowed; and the scene,
£„ beautiful, so wild, so sweet;
tV iere forests, fields, and waters meet,
]. bathed in snclt delicious lines,
'death the twilight'* fulling dews, ,
That III in, afar from sorrow’s sphere,
jtlght muse away his anguish here ;
\Viiill*, o’er his erring thoughts, suhdm'd,
Tut quint tranqitilhung mood,
That tone of harmony, would steal,
Which poets feign, and angels feel.
T’ar'.h mswers to the lines above—
The music erases in th- grove;
While not a breeze in waiul’rlng, stirs
The brandies of tilts silent firs
Tint stretch their azure cones on high,
And shoot into the lucid sky.
Lo ! in the south a silver slar
With amber radiance shine* afar ;
The eldest daughter of th" night;
In glory warm, in beauty bright,
Thou diamond in the pathless dome
Of azure, whither dost thou crime ?
Tar—far. within the orbless bine,
A liny lustre twinkles through,
With distant and unsteady light,
To eatcli tin* eye, then inoek the sight,
Till, as the shades of llarkness frown,
And throw their viewless curtains down,
The very veil that mantles earth,
Awakens thee to higher birth,
And hills the glow, with purer ray,
A lily on the tomb of Day.
MATEDNAL FONDNESS.
There is a feeling in the mother’s heart,
There is a wish iiimtter’d, unexprest,
Which, like a serrel not to I'" reveal’d,
Dwells ever at her heart, in silence scal’d ;
It is that hope of happiness she forms
For her young offspring : which not all the
storms
Of life. its woes, its 'icknrss, nor its pains,
Can vanish, hot unchangeable remains ;
Jt is a mother's hope that stili increases
Till the existence of ils object ceases.
Mil. GUIT.T.F.’S ASC’EN SI ON.
I started at 3 o’clock and 3ft minutes, on
Saturday afternoon, the Mth of October, By
some mistake and many people interfering
to assist me. in amending, the balloon lost a
considerable quantity of the gas. In less
than five minutes l ascended to the distance
of I Juo feet, when the earth disappeurd in
my view ; there was not a tniffn ieney of dis
tance between my situation and the earth,
and to disengage myself from the balloon
would have been attended with great dan
ger. 'n this situation, when 1 could not see
any part of the earth, I remained about 30
minutes, when I was transferred to a clear re
gion, and had the advantage of the sun, which
made the earth appear to me to he. covered
with snow ; from thence t entered into ano
ther region of cl >uds much darker than the
former ones, and having no valve to my bal
loon, I was obliged to ascend much higher
than I would otherwise have done. In this
situation, n hen I ascendi d about 3ft,000 feet,
according to th" calculation 1 made' with the
help afa barometer, which 1 had with me,
the air was so obscure that 1 could neither
si-e the balloon or parachute, and owing to
the great cold experienced, and also the fa
tigue, I feel asleep, ami slept for some time.
I would still have continued lu ascend, had it
not bci ii for the wet stmeol the balloon which
made it very heavy, and this I attribute to
the cause why my descent was sooner than I
expected. A singular circumstance, &, which
I never have experienced, happened to me in
my descent—during the time 1 remained sur
rounded by clouds, I could distinctly hear
the report of some guns—I attribute this to
the atmosphere being generally covered vv itli
clouds and 1 believe that a commotion in the
n:r will sooner communicate it to u dark than
a clear atmosphere. When! first dieovered
the earth, I descended so rapidly, owing to
the balloon being heavy, that my parachute
opened itself. When I got lo the ground in
on open field and having no grappling irons,
I was dragged about the distance of Market
street, until the balloon was arrested in its
course by a forest, where, with the assistance
of some persons, 1 was aide to get out of my
basket and secure the balloon. Mr. Ralph
II. Smith, to whom I herewith offer my sin-
errest thanks, was kind enough to accompa
ny me to Trenton where we arrived at 8
o’clock 1’. M.
