The hour I fir*! drew breath;
And every footftep I proceed,
It tracks me with increasing speed;
I turn ; it moats me ; Death

It points forever at ni) heart.
And soon of writ mud he said,
That I have lived—that I an* dead'
Of all I leave behind,
A few may weep a little while,
Then bless my memory with a snide;

The pride of battle, din <>f arms,
The glory and the guilt
Of nations treacherously enslaved,
As realms by patriot martyrs laved
Of blood in-tantly spill.
And million' ?ariilked to fate,
To in.»he one little mortal great
Let Scott in wilder strains, delight
To chant the lady an 1 the knight,
The tournament, the chase,
The ujaard s deeds without a name,
Perils by atnbu'h, Hood and flame.
Or pittu*e*q o ly trace
Tie hill* that form a world «o high,
The lake that seems a downward sky.
Let H'orJfmri/i w cave in mystic rbyiut,
Feeling* iLe/fahly sublime ;

Vet %o our yielding breusts enthrall,
Hi* soul sb«l! transmigrate through nil,
His thoughts become our own :
And ‘traneely pleased, we Mnile to fiud,

Let Campbell s sweeter numbers fl«>w
Thra-ieh every change of joy or wo,
Ib-pc s dreaming dreams display
The Pennsvfvauian cottage wild;
Th*‘frenzy of O'Conner's child,
(Jr Linden’s dreadful day*;
And still in each new theme appear
To every Muse and Grace more dear.
Let Byron apth untr< mbling hand,
Impetuous foot and fiery brand.

height, and extend along the shore about
ten miles ; the projections, and indenta

In many placet, vast caverns are worn
into the rocks by the waves, the en
trance to w hich are sometime, cragged
and irregul ir, and sometimes regular
hemispheric d arches,supported by migh
ty pillars. The smallest wave rushing
into these caverns, causes a loud, jarring,
and awful sound, which, to the ear of
the passenger, is dashed along by echo,
to be toingied with, aii-J to Increase the
noises which rosh from more di«taw
caverns.
The Indians never pa*s these rocks,
hut in a'ralin time, and when there are
no indic.itions of a storm. It is said that
they believe (lie caverns to be the abode
of bad spirits, and, owing to their super
stition, or to the awe which the scenery
inspire*, they generally observe a pro
found silence when passing them.
