DESTRUCTION OF SQUIRRELS.
The I’iqua Gazette of March 2C, states
that four thousand two hundred nod
seventy one of these animals were de
stroyed in that country in three days
hunting. The Dayton paper mention"
that one thousand squirrels were shot in
that neighborhood on the 2'Jtli ult.
union with tho monarchy of Spain, upon th
constitutional system. From thty source
this intelligence has been received, il is sup
posed it will prove incorrect. Other arrivals
state the President’s Message relative to the
recognition of the independence ol those co
lonies, had been received, and occasioned
great rejoicing.
Thn Spanish and Russian Ministers have
arrived in New-York. Mr. Poletica, was to
have proceed for Liverpool oil the 16th mat.
Nathan T<v(vson, late a Colonel in the
Army, has been appointed by flic President,
with th of the Senate, to he Pay

formerly held.—-Yu/, fid.
P,y one of ihe acts of Congress gOOOO is
appropriated for the survey of the coast of
Florida, under the direction ot the Piexi-
deut of the. United States. This appropria
lion grew out of thn resolution which Mr.
ilii.t., of Maine, submitted to that effect at
an early part of Ihe session. An accurate
chart of that const is a desirable object, in a
mercantile ns well as naval point of view,
especially as our knowledge of it is at pies-
ent so limited.—lb-
Important in commerce. — We learn
from an intelligent friend j'i"t from
Washington, (says the Ldilor ol the
New-York Evening Post) that there e
now a prospect, we may say n moral cer
tainty, that a commercial treaty on terms
of amicable reciprocity, will ere long I"
concluded between the United States
and France. This is a measure next in
consequence to the removing the British
resitictions on the West India trade.
Both events will proclaim in a triumph
ant manner, the wisdom nf the A me r i" a 1*
Statesman, who so particularly am! re-
resolutely persisted in supporting our re
taliatory system, which the short-sighted
politicians among us, strove t» induce
the country to abandon, at the very mo
ment of success.

BLACK SEA.
During the context between Turkey and Bui-

necessity tie suspended, the grain which is
exported from Odessa in tranquil times, will be
required for the support of those vust armies
which must occupy Bessarabia and Romania,

which annually arrive from Ihe Black Sea

off by a war with Turkey, necessarily must give
employment lo our shipping, and find a market
