Tin/ homo, wild plant, i. where each sound
Of revelry hath long been o’er,
Where song s full notes once pealed around,
But now urc heard no more.
The Roman, on Ills bottle plains,
Where kings before Ids eagles bent,
Entwined tlieu with nulling strains,
Around the victor’s lent ;
Tut there, though fresh In glossy green,
Triumphantly thy boughs might wave,
Belter thou lov’st the silent scene,
Around thy victor's grave.
Where sleep the sons of aces flown,
The bards and heroes of the |i.M —
tVliere, thro’ the halls of glory gone,
Murmurs the wintry blast ;
Where years arc hast'ning to etface
Each record of the grand nrd fair,
Though in thy solitary grace,
Wreaths of the tomb I are there.
Thou,o’er the shrines offallcn gods,
On classic plains dost mantling spread,
And veil the desolate abode*
And ritles of the dead
Deserted palaces of kings,
Arches of triumph, long o'crlhrown,
And all once glorious earthly things,

Oh ! many a temple, once sublime,
Beneath the blue Italian sky,
Hath nought of beauty left by time,

To wave where banners wav'd of yore ;
O'er mouldering towers by lovely Rhine
Cresting the rocky shore.

Homes of the mighty, whoso renown

MR. JEFFERSON’S PORTRAIT.
The admirers of Air. Jefferson have
sow an opportunity of indulging them-
seltes with a sight of the most perfect
resemblance that has yet been offered
to the view of the citizens of Philadel
phia, a fine whole length Pot trait of that
distinguished Statesman, painted by Sul

ing now exhibiting at Earle ana Sully's
Gallery, Chesnut-st. near the corner ol
Fifth-st. The young gentlemen of that
institution having engaged Air. Sully to
paint a likeness of their illustrious origi
nal patron and president, in order to
decorate their Academy in a manner
Worthy of such a subject, Mr. Sully re
paired for that purpose to Alonticcllo,
from which after being entertained by
Air. Jefferson with the elegance and
hospitality for w hich no nun is more
remarkable than our illustrious ex-pre
sident, he returned to this city a lew
days ago, bringing the desired portrait
along with him, so far on its way to its
original destination ; where for the gra
tification of the city, he intends to re
tain it for exhibition till the 20lh of this
month, when it will pass on to New-

Point,
Those who have seen this portrait
have expressed their admiration of it.
not only as an extraordinary likeness of
the illustrious statesman, it is intended
to represent, but as a specimen of pro
fessional skill and science that cannot fail
to contribute largely to the established
celebrity of the great artist who painted
it, and to confer credit upon the country
in which it was produced. [Dan. Press.

because something similar occurred while
our acquaintance, Major Gillespie, was in

then; was a dreadful thunder storm, accom

and on the following morning, the hanks of

established by the Emperor Paul in IV'97,
and has extensive factories in Irkutck, Yu-

The company has also formed establish
ments on tin; north west coast of America,
on the Bnrnnow Islands, at hodjakon, anil
in the new Russian colony of Ivoss, in llo-
manzoll’s Bay. Before the existence of the
Company, there were only some private
trading houses mi the Aleutian arid Kurile Is
lands, amounting altogether to 4 t. In the
course of 5+ yea is, from 171.3 to 17!I7, these
houses exported peltry to the amount of on

OLD MAIDS.
A sprightly writer expresses his opin
ion of ojd mauls in tlie following man
ner :—I am inclined to believe, that ma
ny ol the satirical aspersions cast upon
old maids tell more to their credit than
is generally imagined. Is a woman re
markably neat in her person ? “ She

particularly reserved towards the oilier
sex ? “ She has till the sqncnmislmcss

tics nl (lie terrible creature, an “ old
