Fair tnoilost ilower Hint shuns lurmln,
Whose sweets all other sweets ex. el,
Oft have I sought thee in the simile,
Anil ivalcli'il thy slowly openiug bell.
In life's fair morn, when I was blest,
Anil sigh il like others to be gay—
Pale Ilower! I placml Ihec near my breast,
And threw the blushing rose an ay.
Yet 'twas not hatred thnt did guide
nlV infant choice, and ntov.i my scorn ;
Metbougbt the rose was swollen with pride,
And though neglected and forlorn.
May pity ever thus prevail,
And softly all my soul incline,
To listen to the plnintivo tale,
And make the cause of sorrow mine.
And when I see misfortune sink
'Neath cruel pride's sarcastic rail,
I II raise its drooping head, and think
On tbee, sweet Illy of the vale.
SONG—BY T. CAMPBELL.
Star that bringest home the bee
And selt’st the weary labourer free'
If any star shed peace, 'li, lliuu,
Thnt send'sl it from above,
Appearing when Heaven’s breath andbrow
Are sweet us bet 's we love.
Come to the luiuriant skies,
Whilst the landscape's odours rise,
Whilst far off low ing beards ure beard,
Aud songs, when toil is done,
From cottages who smoke unstirr'd
Curls yellow in Hie fun.
Star of love's soft interviews,
Parted lovers on thee insne;
Ther remembrance in lleav'ti,
Of thrilling vows thou art,
Too delicious to be riven
By absence from the heart.

Lieutenant Manning, late Adjutant Ge
neral of the JUilitia of South Carolina.—
Many oilier proofs could he adduced ol
Manning’s presence of mind and cool
intrepidity in action. It is grateful to
me to mention one of these. At the
battle of Kutaw, after I he British line
had been broken, anil the Old Bluff,, a
regiment that had boasted of the extra
ordinary feats they were to perform,
were running from the field. Manning
in the enthusiasm of that valor in which
he was so eminently distinguished, sprang
forward in pursuit, directing the platoon
which he commanded to follow him.—
He did not cast an eye behind him, until
he found himself near a large brick house,
into which the York Volunteers, com
manded by Cruger, were reliring. The
British were on all sides of him, and not
an American soldier nearer than one
hundred yards. lie did not hesitate a
moment, but springing at an officer who
was near him, seized him by llie collar,
and exclaiming in a harsh tone of voice
—" Damn you sir, you are my prison
er,” wrested his sword from his grasp,
dragged him by force from the house,
and keeping his body as a shield of de
fence from the heavy fire sustained Irnm
the windows, carried him off without re
ceiving any injury. Manning has often
related that the moment when he expect
ed his prisoner would have made an ef
fort for liberty, he with great solemnity
commenced an enumeration of his titles
—“ 1 am, sir Henry Barry, Deputy Ad
jutant General ofthe British army, Cap
tain in the 52d Regiment, Secretary to
the Commandant at Charleston.” “ En
ough, enough, sir,” said the victor, ” you
nre just the man I was looking for ; fear
nothing for your life, you shall screen
me from danger, ami I shall take spe
cial care of you.” lie had retired in
this manner some d'stance from the brUlt
house when Ire saw Capt. Robert Jonett,
of the Virginia line, engaged in a single
combat with a British officer. They had
selected each other for battle a little be
fore, the American armed with a broad
sword, the Briton with a musket and
bayonet. As they came together, a
thrust was made a Jonett, which happi
ly parried, and both dropped their arti
ficial weapons, being too much in con-
taetto use them with effect, resorted to
those with which they had been furnish
ed by nature. They were both men of
great bulk and vigor, and while strug
gling, each anxious to bring his adversa
ry to the ground, a grenadier who saw
the contest ran to the assistance of his
officer, made a lounge with his body,
missed Jonett’* bayonet butdroveit be
yond the curve into his coat In attempt
in'' to withdraw (lie entangled weapon,
he threw both the commits to the ground
—when gelling it free, lie raised it de
liberately, determined not to fail again
in his purpose, but to transfix Jonett,-
it was in this crisis, that Manning ap
proached—not near enough, however,
to reach the grenadier with his arm
In order to gain lit*', and to arrest the
stroke, he exclaimed in an angry
antlioratho tone—“You damned brute
will you murder the gentleman ?”—The
soldier supposing himself addressed by
one of his own officers, suspended the
contemplated blow, and looked round
to see the person who had thus spoken
to him. Before he could recover front
the surprise into which he hail been
thrown, Manning, now sufficiently near
smote him with his sword across (lu
eves, and felled him to the ground—
when Jonett disengaged himself from his
opponent, and snatching up the musket,
as he attempted to rise, laid him dead
by a blow from the butt end of it. Man
ning was of inferior sizp, but strong and
remarkably well formed. Jonett, lite
rally speaking a giant. This probably
led Barry, who could not have wished
the particulars of his capture I be com
mooted on, in reply, when asked by his
brother officers how he came to be ta
ken, “ 1 was overpowered by a huge
Virginian.”

MARRIAGE PROMISE.
Of late there have been several heavy
verdicts obtained for a breach ql the mar
riage promise ; a crime which is truly de
serving of severe punishment, when coin
mitted without cause or justification —a I
feit of oaths—a breach of faith—distress of
mind, mi rtific ition, and probabl; private
misery are results of tills disregard to the
most sacred of obligations ; and the heavy
sums of money which offenders have bad

TO THE PUBLIC.
J ' CaRtNOCHEN and P. MITC HELL, are
• sorry to be again brought before the pub
lie by a second notice of Mr. Christie’. 8 , who lias
undoubtedly claims against them, which when
finally liquidated on the decision of (lie suit
now pending, they will try to satisfy ussoern as
possible thereafter.
The deeds under which Mr. Christie claims
nn exclusive right to all the real and personal
estate of Carnochen and Mitchell, ure consider
ed as informal, unjust auu illegal. Hence,
they have been brought, aud are still before
the Court, and other deeds have been executed
and recorded, conveying the property for the
use of all their creditors, Mr. Christie included;
without any tru.st or reservation beneficial to
C. nnd M. or their families—nnd if this he not
agreeable to that gentleman, it mu-t neverthe
less appear fair and equitable to the public and
all who have a sense of juHice.
'Tlie Trustees under the lute deeds are anxious
to sell \ he lauds in Florida, alluded to in the no
tice of Mr. C. and to apply the proceeds to the
immediate payment of part of his demand and
deposilc a sufficiency thereof to coverall his
, claims, subject to the decision of the Court—
but his opposition lo any reasonable sale, as
one interested in his own right, whilst injuring
ill parties concerned, must be home until a
ale can be made under an order of Court.
