In Tilt Senate, the bill to abolish im-

But he was not to be easily discouraged
--lie went to a watchmaker, and learned
that the watch was not worth more than
live dollars. Ho again returned to watch
where the Frenchman disappeared. He
thought he saw the man, and enquired
whether he had not sob! him a watch.—
The man denied it, but ho would not
let him go until lie gave hi? name and ad

As an example of Washington’s in
dustry and attention to his domestic af
fairs, we were told that he used to ride
over liis plantation every morning and
see that his farm was properly managed.
Alter breakfast lie would order liis hor-u>
to the door, and then say to hi? g'feits
whoever they might he, “ gentlemen 1
must lock to my business—if you will
accompany me around my plantation
well—if not, you most amuse yourselves
till my return.” The afternoon and e-
veriiog were devoted to the rites ol hos
pitalitv. On inquiring, if he eves
wrought himself, it was answered that in
a case of emergency no man more chepr
folly lent a hand to the work, or was
more expert and active. .
In illustration of liis benevolence and
charity, it is stated that he had a seine,
with w hicli great .quantities of shad and
herring were caught in the Potomac.—
When a draught was made, the neigh
boring people were accustomed to Hock
round, to obtain a share of the fi-h.
Washington used lo give directions to Ins

prominent subject of discussion,
question has yet been taken on the
main principle, or any of the incidental
propositions; and of course no decisive
opinion can be formed of the fate of the
measure in that body. Korean any sa
tisfactory indications of the issue be ga
thered from the course of the discussion,
as both sides of the question are main
tained with grent ability ; tliongh the
advocates of the bill have, so far, out
numbered its opponents. The interest
of the subject, and the talents engaged in
the debate, have attracted to the Senate
crowded auditories for several days.
In the Hoes*, of Representatives,
the day was so far consumed yesterday
on the bill concerning the United States'

As we approached Uie door, and lue
noise and bustle occasionally lulled, out
ears were saluted with the more grate
ful sound of music, emanating from a lull
