have been delivered in Virginia, and was
first published in the Columbian Maga
zine.]
GENESIS xxx I. 2
And Rachel said unto JmcoIv, Give roe chil

From these words, my brethren, I beg
leave to make a few observations, which
may tend to unfold some new ideas of the
at St. Helena, where In* hud continued
since, in slavery. This story lime every
mark of truth. His countenance had a frank
and benevolent expression ; hisey. s were
animated and sparkling. In short, his ap
pearance was by no means abject; but, on
die cou'rare, truly prepossessing.”
“ Poor Toby,” said he one d iy, “ lias been
tom from his family, from his native land,
and sold to slavery; coaid any thing he
in.ue miserable to himself, or uioro ciiuii-
n.il in others! If this crime he the act of
the English captain alone, he is doubtless
one of the vilest of men ; but if it he that
of the w hole of the crew, it may have been
committed hy men, perhaps, not so base as
might be imagined ; for vice is always indi-
vid'ud, and scarcely ever collective. Joseph’s
brethren could not bring themselves to slay
fiim ; w hile Judas, a cool, hy pocritical, cal
culating villain, betrayed his master. A phi
losopher has affirmed, that men are horn
wicked ; it would be both difficult and idle
to attempt to discover whether the assertion
be true. This, at least, is certain, that the
great mass of society is not wicked ; for if
the mijot ify were determined to he criminal,
Sind to violate the laws, who would have
the power to restrain or prevent them ?—
This is tli*' triumph of civilization ; for this
happy result springs from its bosom, and a-
rise* out of its nature : Sentiments are for
llie most part traditionary ; .vc feel them
became they were felt by tlnwe who pre
ceded us ; thus we must look to the devr-
lopemcnl of human reason and faculties for
the only Ley to social order, the only •ccrct
of the legislator. Only those who wish to
deceive the. people and rub: them f.ir their
own personal advantage would de-ire to
Veep them in ignwance ; for the more they
are enlightened, the more will they Im con
vinced of the utility of laws, and of the ne
cessity of defending them: him! the more
steady, happy and prosperous will society
become. If, however, knowledge should
ever be dangerous in the multitude, it
only In. when the government, in opposition
to the Interests of the people, drives them
in o an iuiuutur.il situation, or dooms the
Inwcr classes to pci fall for want. In such a
case, know ledge would inspire them w ith
spirit to defend themselves, or to become
criminal.
•• My C ode alone, from its simplicity, has
been mure fenefici.il to France than the
whole, mass «f laws whi« h preo d**d it. My
whools am! my sysb hi of mutual instruction
are preparing generations yet unknown —
Thus during tnj* r* ign, crimes w ere rapidly
diminishing, while on thcconlrmy with our
neighbors in England they hav** been In-
crrndng to r frightful degree. This alone
,, sufficient to enable any one to form a de
cisive judgment of the respective govern-

The frr-t remark that occurs is the unrea*
sonahlrness and folly of Itaehrl’s request to
her husband. She asks fur children as the
condition of her life. “(Jive me children,
says she, nr cl<c I die." All! Weak and m
Considerate woman! Little didst thou know
till- dreadful connexion that was established
in tile tiook of fate, lietw-i i n thy death and
the birth of children. Hut Heaven often
curses human folly hy answering its prayers.
Rachel's desires for an increase of her family
ire gratified, hut alas ! It n lii l knows only a
short-lived joy from this event.
She dies in childbed with her second son.
Her lovely Imy drop, from her breast. His
smiting infancy U prattling childhood afford
her no phaoiru—for it n lid's icmuini have
descended into the grave, and mixed with
the clods of the valley.
A second remark that is suggested by the
word* of my text,i«, that upon certain occa
sions, anger is a necessary passion, and that
it may he exercised, with peculiar proprie
ty, hy husbands, when the folly of their
wives requires it.
J acob was a man of uncommon dignity of
character, lie was wise, prudent and religi
ons—and yet Jacob was angry. He was a
fond, indulgent hii-hand—md yet lie was
angry at his wife. Tor we read that Ihe an
gv-r of Jacob was kindled against Rachel.
Rut let us examine a little fur tiler and in
quire in what manner J irnli discovers and
gives vent to his anger. Does he stamp up
on the floor, and call his wife by any impro
per names?—No. Doe, lie drag her across
the floor by the hair of her head, or threat
en to throw her behind the fire ? No.-
Does lie pinch her—nr kick her—or beat
her with hi, fist ?—No—fiir Jacob was a
brave man, and lower disgraced his charac
ter as a soldier hy striking a woman. He
rebukes his wife hy reasoning w ith her,—
“ Am 1. («ays lie,) in (lod's stead, who hath
withheld from thee the fruit nf the womb?"
I.- arn lienee, ye husbands, from the ex
ample of Jacob, (o treat yunr wives as l'f.i-
“ooable creature*—in ibis way only, yon
will nut only reform them, but secure i|ii ir
perpetual estei m and affeelinn for you. We
hive beard the end of Rachel, the wife of
Jacob, but unhappily for mankind her pos
terity did not die with her.
There aie It vein |, still alive ‘n every part
ol the world. Vv tide one cries out, give me
children, or cl-e I do—there are hundreds
of her descendants, who cry out, give me no
more children, or else I die. Nor is this all
