Tli^Taud improved as above, we under

origin^ remark ol the late Ldmuoil ltuf-
ijuTtyfot. is far easier to restore to fertili
ty Afyn out lands that were originally so,
rifau tf> bring into the same condition those
naturally poor. Uudoubtedly the deep
bringing up fresh uuwasted
;acb of roots of the plants, aud
facilities to extend beneath,
to do with causing the in-
as the manure applied. The
iniiot but think, would have
been more valuable, if applied nearer the
surlace. We are sure it is upon all heavy
clayey soils. Upon loose alluvials, their
texture permits the more rapid diffusion
of ammonia, aud the roots of plauts extend
more readily towards the sources of nu
triment, and there is not 6o innch ne
cessity of the mauure beiug near the sur-
iace. But to plow iu deeply stable ma
nure upon heavy soils, half its imme
diate value would be lost for common
crops. With viues and fruit trees, their
strong roots will penetrate in every
direction, and the precise distance from
the suiface is a matter of less conse
quence. Our own experence, and the best
practice, both in Europe and America, leads
us to apply manure at the surface, alter
the ground has been deeply arid thorough
ly broken up, and then plow it in lightly,
mixing it tborougly with the three iuebes
of earth nearest the surface.
We presume the reason why the com
parative cost of labor is not given, wa% be
cause iu both cases, the crop was cultivat
ed by the same force : but evidently the
more thorough preparation of the land, and
•the difference of harvesting 6,600 addition
al bushels of corn, are as much entitled to
be charged to the account of the last two
years of improvement, as the mere cost of
hauling ana spreading the manure.
