Mr Smith says he can grind on this wheel

Mr. Editor ; — In looking over the col
Ilians of your valuable paper of February
22d, my eye fell upon a communication
from W. L. Geiger which very much meets
with the feelings of this individual, and
which I am in for. teeth and toe tun/.
“ T Could a uni funnily of text hooks in our
schools increase the interest in education ? ”
is the heading of his article ; and beiug a
merchant, the section is the one that strikes
mo with much force.
Mr. Geiger is decidedly mistaken when
he says that “country Merchants are afraid
to buy books to sell,’’ hut he hits the nail
on the bead and clinches the same with
one stroke, when he says: “the facias
the}’ do not know what kind of books will
be used in the neighborhood schools ; and
if they make a purchase of books, those
books may fall unsold on bis bands.”
Now Sir. Editor, let a merchant of 20 i
vears experience, give in his confession.—
Going to my shelves where books, station
ery, &c., are shelved, what do 1 find ? —
Books bought in 1850, 1851. 1852, 1850,
1S54 and so on down to 1S70. Amounting
iu all to an aggregate of nearly 5500 paid :
out to publishers, and to day no benefit to
me. I find the names of Smith, Greanieaf, j
Smiley, Adams, Loomis, Davies, Quack-
enbos, Emerson, Clarke, Comstock
Bullions, Andrews, and a legion of ;
other authors’ names in brazen letters
conspicuously upon my shelves. All, or
nearly all, a de.ad letter to this chap. Does
the above fact look like a merchant is
afariii to buy f No, sir. What, in the j
name of common sense, is the use of one’s
increasing his stock when full to overflow
ing and no decrease from any’ sonce ?
Tom Dmukenman comes along and
wants a school : Trustees meet A list of
books are made out and sent to the mer
chant, with instructions to post haste the
bill with merchant’s money, and when
said books come, let the patrons of the
school, Tom, Dick, and Harry have them
on a credit; away goes order, money ac
company ing, and perhaps before the books
arrive the teacher quits or is dismissed, a
drunken, worthless vagabond. Sam Pride-
man is next employed. Elaborates very
loudly upon some particular author.—
Must have at least two dozen copies, as
lie is sure his school will be very much in
want of them as soon, or sooner possibly,
than they can arrive. Books come, and
to the poor merchant’s ebagrimi, three
copies are taken. Balance carried to ac
count of P and L.
Mr. Editor, I could go on and enumerate
several such circumstances as the above
two, but what good ? None under the
face of Heaven. The poor merchant is
made to suffer financially, and will to the,
end of “ kiugdom come” unless some sys
tem is devised. .
How many blight an shining jewels are
hid to-day from us on account of such a
deplorable, condition of our present sys
tein of education ! How many editors,
the brighest types, wear their life out to
sustain some political party ? How many
thousand pounds of type are used annually
publishing every thing except the inter
est of the education ofthe rising generation?
What.it may be asked, has produced this
condition which is now’ so painfully’ mani
tested in our common and public schools?!
AH from an interost not being manifested
in the w’ants of the little ones, and a un
ion on some standard Text Books.
Oh ! shame, shame ! How in the name
of Heaven do we expect to prosper as a
people socially, morally’, religiously and
politically, unless we adhear to Georgia’s
sacred motto, “Wisdom Justice, and Mod
e: ation.”
Then, for Heaven’s sake, let all arouse
from our lethargy, shake cf the mantle of
clotbfulness and break our breast plates of
idleness. Let unity reign iu our halls of
Congress—legislative and family ; around
the family circle, and in cur school rooms.
May all teachers, parents, and the great
levers of civilization, raise the cry for !
6ome practical working system in our com ■
mon schools. Let every editor, from the
Savannahs to the Chattahoochee, from
the mountains to the land of flowers, de
vote at least two columns of his paper to
some system that will lift our little ones
and place them where God Almighty fare
ordaintd and predestinated, that they
should be placed—on the pinnacle of fame,
and this gorgon of political strife will
cease, homes made happy, diamonds made
to shine, and we as a people made pros
perous and happy.
Adopt some system in regard to school
books, Appleton’s, Butler’s or Barnes’ se
nes, any one, so it be a good one. and not
tainted with radicalism. Let the poor,
penniless meichant know tise wants of the
country, especially those who have to
kspp under the same shed calicoes, trace-
chaius, cider-barrels, brooms, hames and
talers, &cc , &c. Let negro protests, negro
robbeiies, and the future of (be negro of
the South be expunged from our ably rd- '
ited papers. Yes, the spirits that are
wanted to place them in our papers be
conjured, aud oh ! what a ha ppv time will
be ours.
in lieu of the above in columns now
blank, let them be filled with advertise
ments of good school books, their merits
and successes. Then all, parent, teacher,
student, tiustees and merchants, will know
"hat to do. All will he merry as a marri
age bell. Little ones will iise up and
cull you blessed. Prosperity and liappi
l'tss will once more be restored to our now
infracted aud toni-assunder country.
