It was all in fun
WASHINGTON (UPI) — They called him “skinflint”
and “pinchpenny,” but retiring Rep. H.R. Gross, R-lowa,
whose career has been devoted to holding down
congressonal spending, knew it was all in fun.
Rep. Frank Thompson, DN.J., told Gross’ colleagues at
the Washington Press Club farewell ceremony
Wednesday that in all his years of acquaintance with
Gross “I don’t know that he has ever spent over 85 cents.”
Rep. Morris K. Udall, D.Ariz., proposed a book about
Gross to be called ‘ ‘Nitpicking and Pennypinching in Your
Spare Time for Fun and Profit.”
Washington Press Club President Ronald Sarro |
presented Gross “50 uncirculated pennies to pinch” and •
other gifts to honor his cost-cutting ways.

Monkey business
CHICAGO (UPI) — Police on
the Northwest Side, armed with
the knowledge of how to catch
a kangaroo, found themselves
on a wild monkey chase
Friday.
Mrs. Dorothy Dedmon called
police Friday when she found a
furry creature sleeping on the
doorstep of her home on the
Northwest Side.
Police responded, thinking it
may be the elusive kangaroo
that roughed up two of
Chicago’s finest about a month
ago and escaped. The kangaroo
has been spotted in several
cities near Chicago in the past
few weeks, but has not been
caught.
Upon arriving, police found it
was a squirrel monkey. After
several attempts of chasing the
monkey around the house,
police were finally able to
corner it under the porch.
