Rocky won’t try for veep
ATLANTA (DPI) - Vice
President Nelson Rockefeller
feels his exit from President
Ford’s ticket may help Ford
“in a negative sense,” but will
not “put emotional pressure on
the President” by trying to
regain the number-two spot.
At a news conference prior to
meeting with Southern Repub
licans, who were considered a
main factor in his removal
from the GOP ticket, Rockefell
er said Thursday Ford can
afford to lose some Southern
states and still win the
nomination for a full term in
the White House.
He added, however, that he
speaks only for himself and did
not mean that the Republicans
are conceding the Democrats
their historic dominance in this
region.
Rockefeller came to Atlanta
for a SSO-a-ticket reception for
GOP congressional candidates,
but grudgingly conceded his
appearance was a plug for
Ford’s campaign against for
mer California Gov. Ronald
Reagan, who is counting on
Southern support to offset his
early-primary losses.
“I didn’t want him to be
encumbered by someone else —
there’s only one president,”
said Rockefeller. “The vice
president’s responsiblity is to
preside over the Senate and
being a staff assistant to the
president, and just not get in
his way.
“In a negative sense, if that’s
a plug, yeah — yes, ma’m,”
Rockefeller told a woman who
asked if his departure was a
boon to the Ford campaign. He
said if he showed any interest
in rejoining the ticket, “I’m
putting emotional pressure on
the President, because then
he’s got to think, ‘Well, maybe
he wants it and maybe I got to
consider this.
“And I want him to be totally
free and totally relaxed, just
the way I am,” said Rockefel
ler.
He said he does not think

ATLANTA (UPI) - The sth
Circuit Court of Appeals has
upheld the conviction of former
state Sen. Leßoy Johnson on a
charge of providing false
information to the Internal
Revenue Service.
In an opinion filed Thursday,
Judge David Dyer dismissed
arguments that the affadavit in

out to “destroy for political
purposes” Secretary of State
Henry M. Kissinger.
“Foreign policy has been the
strength both in the re-election
of President Nixon — before he
got-into that tragic situation —
and, I think, it’s the strength of
President Ford,” said Rockefel
ler. “Now, if you’re running
agianst him, in the Republican
Party or in the Democratic
Party, you gotta go after the
guy where he’s strong, and he’s
strong in foreign policy.
“And if his right-hand man in
foreign policy is strong and
popular, as Secretary Kissinger
is in this country, you’ve got to
try and destroy him for
political purposes,” said Rock
efeller. “But I don’t think it
serves the best interests of
America.”
