Movement of Indians.—It appears from
letters just received from the Superinten
dent ot Indian Affairs, at St. Louis, that a
great council of the Cherokoes, Delawares,
Sliawauces, Wean, Kickapoos, Pianka-
shaws, and Pet.rias, residing west of the
Mi>sissippi, has ueen held ; ni which it was
agreed to receive their Rod Brethren from
the cast, and to invite them to come uinong
rliein as soon ns possible. This subject has
been in agitation for about two years ;—
tmmnwhiln, wampum bus been exchanged
in great abundance between the tribes east
and west of the Mississippi, until, ut lurt,
tin! object of both has been agreed upon,
and a deputation is now on its way to
Washington, led by Col. P. Menard, to
conclud’ 1 an arrangement witii the Presi
dent of the United States, for the removal
of those Indians residing on the eust of the
Mississippi. If the arvanm-niom is made, it
is not unlikely but itinav embrace the tribes
in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, except the
OttawHs.and a few others.who,it is probable,
•would prefer to join their friends west of
Lake Michigan.
Those I mli.ins consider tho step they have
taken as a very important one to them ; arid
look upon its completion as essential to their
prosperity and hapiness. They were ve
ry agreeably surprised to learn what the
President had said on the subject in hid
message to Congress, at the opining of the
RCftdofr Our Great, Father” said they

our miserable situation, with a view to our
future happiness, to have enabled hint to
speak to tin* great council so exactly in a-
greement with the wishes of the Indians, as
he lias in his talk to Congress.”
Thus it would seem a movement is begun
upon the plan now before Congress, for bet
tering the condition of our Indians, by In-
dmns t/umsclrrs.—This certainly uugors fa
vorably to its ultimate completion. There
can be little doubt, fn m the nature of the
Man. and its beneficial tendency upon the
Indians, but they will embrace it just in
proportion as they may he enlightened to
perceive its natural and huppy cflecta upon
