It has been stated that the experiment with
leather, recently made upon a schooner at
New-York, did not answer the purpose in
tended.
A Boston paper informs ns that another
experiment was made upon the ship Yiigi-
nia, the bottom of which was covered with
leather about 5 mouths ago. and ttius far
it is found to answer equally us well if not
hotter than copper. Tne ship lias since
made a voyage to the Mediterranean, from
whence she returned a few days since, and
now lies in Boston. The leather now
appears as bright and clean us when it was
first put on, although the sheathing ofthe
ship was full of barnacles. The captain,
who went tho voyage in her, as well as
other shipmasters, are of opinion that
the leather will answer every purpose of
copper. If this he the fact, the improvement
will be important, us we are informed that
the expense of a leather covering is not
more than one third that of copper.
