Sil* Cotton or Colombia,—We have
received from a gentlemen in the country,
a specimen of a peculiar kind of cotton,
which is produced in the republic of Colum
bia, and may be seen et this office. That
in our possession, was obtained near Bogo
ta, the capital. It is of an extremely soft
and'perfectly silky texture end glossy ap
pearance, of a short staple and dark or din
gy color. We ere informed that it grows
on a tree of considerable height, different
from our plant. The cotton grows round
the seed, in something. like the shape of a
pine-apple, so that when picked it requires
no ginning. The Indians work.it into
shawls, die, and a quantity has been sent
to France, Ibr the purpose of ascertaining
whether at .cannot be incorporated iu the

that a gentleman of Scriven County, has
planted a small quantity of the seed, by way

The loss by the, late fire et Boston, is. va
riously estimated, from 500,000, to 1,000,000
of dollars. The fire is said to be the most
destructive that ever occurred in that city,
and by far the most extensive of auy since
the great fire of 1787. Many of the largest
dry goods importers end'dealers, were
among the sufferers. They had, most of
them, just received their spring importa

of their property was saved from tho fire, it
wai not without dsmage.

tic education among the working artisans
ill the large towns nf England mid Scotland.
But the working people are not merely ac
quiring knowledge—they ale communica
ting it, und to tlioee in a condition above
them. Look at the cheap publications, con
veying knowledge nf science ami tiie useful
arts, published in Loudon ; and look at the
merit and character of their contents.—
They not only linve the merit of ingenuity,
and of useful and curious information, but
are distinguished by agrucoof style and a
propriety of tone which shames and rebukes
works & authors of much higher pretension.
In fact, the common people are rapidly usur

this aspect of society we shall offer but one
remark. Social superiority is not main

knowledge and intellect. It is therefore
clearly incumbent upon the uppor classes,
those who are above manual labour, to look
about them, or they will be pushed from

The total sales of Cotton during the last
week amounted to 43,000 bales, the largest
number ever sold in Liverpool in one week.
During tho three first days the demand was
extremely brisk, and priccB advanced l)d
to 2d in American Cotton ; on Wednesday
the demand exceeded any thing we have
ever seen, and before 12 o’clock, 12,000
bulea were Bold ; at that hour a sudden and
unexpected panic took place ; people be
came panic struck, and endeavored to force
sales, which to a small extent was effected
at jd decline: the decline continued until
Saturday, at which time prices had fallen
2d per lb.; in the afternoon, a revival com
menced, and before the close of the day,
sales were made at Jd advance oil the pri
ces of the morning ; this was followed up
yesterday, and 8,000 bales sold at a further
advance of Jd, and we are now within a £d
of our highest point, with every appearanc
of going even higher, confidence being com
pletely restored ; no Buweda are selling un
der I3id.
The stock of American Cotton on hand
is only 39,700 bales, against 165,000 at
same time last year ; and the total stock on
