tcr.ii) becoming so well known, in conse
quence of the great numbers of persons who
used and received benefit from them flie last
Season, that the subscriber deemB it scarce
ly necessary to enter into a detail of their
properties and effects. He will, however,
for the information of those who may still
rerrtsin unacquainted with them, remark,
that there are two springs—the waters nf
one of which, are strongly impregnated with
sulpiur ind magnesia—the other with iron.
ThcjfirBt acts on some as a mild, on others,
as.ai active cathartic, and are strongly re-
coimjended in complaints of the liver and
kidnrns, dispen.'i and in all diseases aris
ing f am v utsordered stomach. They at
once omovo indigestion and the cause by
wliicl it is produced, restore lost appetite,
purif the blond, and exhiliarate the spirits.
In cates of debility and weakness, they have
been found particularly efficacious- The
walejs of the other spring arc 6trongly ton
ic, and thought very proper to be used after
drinking the sulphur water. To promote
the effi'cts nf each, hot, cold and shower
buliii are provided.
The. buildings of this establishment, as
mentioned in a farmer advertisement, are
all of brick, and in an eminent degree unite
neatness, convenience and comfort. These
points have been particularly attended to
ip those departments intended for the two
of ladies or families. The adjacent moun
tains abounding in game, gentlemen fond
of hunting, will have an opportunity of in
dulging in that pursuit.. Those preferring
more inactive amusements, will find news
papers. books, chessmen, backgammon ta
bles, Sec.
Amusements also for the ladies have not
been overlooked : Music of the best kind
will be provided for dancing— and such as
are fond of playing on the Forte Piano, will
find in tho drawing room an elegant one
provided for their use. Moderate exercise
on horseback or in carriages, being consid
ered very proper whilst using the waters,
the subscriber takes this occasion to remark
that the part of the country in which his
springs are situated, are peculiarly adapted
to this kind of exercise—they are surround
ed on every Bide by lofty mountains, with a
rich and beautiful valley intervening be
tween. This valley affords excellent roads,
and in riding nut, tne pure air inhaled fresh
from tile mountains, acting in connexion
with the waters, at once gives assurance
of returning health, even to the greatest
invalid. *
Gentlemen from the South, wishing to
dispense with the use of carriages and hor
ses, can come directly to the spot without
incurring the expense of either—they will
proceed by water from Savannah, Charles
ton, or any other southern pert, to Norfolk,
thence in the steam-bout to Richmond, from
whence there is twice a week, a mail stage
that now passes within two miles of this
piace, and after the 15th of June, will
come directly to the spot, passing through
the flourishing town of Lynchburg. After
arriving here and remaining as long as
is ogrceable, they can then proceed to any
of i lie mljacent npringa they may ohoooc in
a hack kept by the subscriber for that pur
pose. Tho distance to the Sweet Springs,
is thirty seven miles—to the White Sulphur,
fifty-five—to the Sweet and Salt Suphur,
sixty—to the Red Sulpiier, seventy-two—
ami to tho Hot and Warm Springs, between
6ixty nnd seventy miles.
It is recommended to gontletnen intend
ing to visit any of the Virginia Watering
Places, to have their letters addressed to
tlie BotctourtSprings. It being the first wa
tering pla-e they will touch at in going, and
the last in returning, they will experience
great convenience in following these direc
tions—because on their arrival they may
, find letters from home, and during their
stay, will have an opportunity of hearing
from their friends every other day, as the
mail from the South arrives three times a
week. If after remaining with the subscri
ber as long as is agreeable, they should
choose to proceed to any nf the neighbor
ing springs, he promises that their Tetters
shall be carefully forwarded, whithersoever
they may direct.
