The state of Georgia is an agricultural
gtnte-it contains not a manufactory with-
i„it—ils best customer is Great Britain,
from whom it has received in exchange for
its great staple, ariicles of necessity and
luxury. To benefit the manufacturer of
oilier states, and enable him to reap a profit
—a tariff has been imposed, which raises
the foreign article, without reducing the do
mestic, and*thus adds to the expense of the
planter, whilst it diminishes the importation
and the consequent demand for his raw ma
terial. Prices it is true have afforded a pro
fit to the planter last season, but, it is tran
sitory, and although complain} may be sub
dued" by temporary success, a reaction will
follow.
No state in the union offers greater fncil
hies for an extensive inland navigation—
an immense portion of tho .trade to New-
Orleans might be directed to Savannah—a
port nearer the sea, more healthful and con
venient to tho North and to Europe—by a
Canal, which from the absence of ice, would
ho sarvicahle every month in the year—yet
we find the General Government subscrib
ing our money liberally to t lie stock of the
I) dawn re and Chesapeake. Canal, which
must bo eluted four months in the year;
a part of the country whose capital is su
perabundant, and the facilities ofcommoree
groat, and assisting the inhabitants ot Mas
sachusetts hy surveys for the purpose of a
creek through Cope Cod, which from the
shifting of tho sand bars must be of little va
lue anil great expense, und must likewise be
closed a considerable part of the year—and
our applications tor bven a survey, liberally
granted to other stales, have been refused.
The notes of the Banks of the Stute of
Georgia, with the exception of the Darien
Bunk, are equal to specie—at. least they are
paid in coin on demand—yet by a most in
jurious order of tho Department at Wash
ington, they were refused in payment of
land disposed of in Florida, whilst those of
Alabama wero received, by which, many ci
tizens of Georgia who attended them to pur
chase were disappointed, and a wanton
injury inflicted on the State—for which no
apology or explanation has been made.
But we must pn-.ise. We cannot if we
would purse the subject farther at the pre
sent time. Wo have repeated a few of the
causes of complaint existing on the part of
Georgia against the United States. We
are tired of the detuil—perhaps the reader
is also tired. We have had but one object,
in view, the justification of our native state.
We have shewn that causes have existed
for intensity of feeling—some of them wo
have in common with our fellow citizens of
many of the other independent members of
this community of yet free stales—others
are wholly and exclusively nurown. They
would perhaps never have found utternnee
but for the course pursued by our enemies—
It. has been forced upon us. Tlmy have ac
cused us intemperance, of disaffection and
rebellion —from their own mouths let them
be judged,
