Considerable diversity of opinion has prevail

t1 the due proportion of original and selected
matter, some urging the propriety of rendering
the Magazine pu'dy original, and others rec
ommending the tutu) exclusion of all hut selec

mise between these two opinions.
A periodical Riview, wholly original & truly
American, combated with ability, and exten

our country. Tlu ‘Worth American Review,”
published quartet at Boston, is the only work
which’ approaches this eharncter. And until
our rending pfllffc uro more disposed than at
present to eiico|iqgc such an enterpri/.e, anoth

success as would |Induce either honor or profit
to the projectors.
The present Edifir of the Amdertlc Magazine*
is, however, designs to render it as nearly an

to depend on the carnal contributions of gentle
men iwho write either for their amusement a-
lone, or frptn fi'iciidffiip to the Editor, would be
a very insecure dependence; although the Eili

sources. Subscribers may however he assured

deed must he its value, if the amusement ami
instruction it affords arc not more than equiva
lent to the expense. The author of the imper
ishable letters of Junius has told us. that the
press is the palladium of Liberty—the safe
guard of all our rights, civil, religious and po-
ptiral. Knox, in his celebrated essays, has de-
c’ured, “With all their faults upon their heads,
newspapers are upon the whole the best bul
warks of our liberty, and the surest defence of
the helpless against the proud man's contumely
and the oppressor's wrong. They sound'the
alarm bell throughout an empire, and no influ
ence is great enough to stifle the SOuml, before
the people examine into its cause.”

make it a respectable anti useful one. To serve
any individual nr party, 7V//M and Justice will
