It has blown so severe a gale of wind
here bum \V S W since yesterday morn
ing about 7 nVIocIt. that serious appre
hensions may he felt for shipping on the
coast. Some damage has been sustained
by a few vessels in the harbor, in spars
and rigging. The draw bridge has recei
ved considerable injury, bv the ship Ed
ward having drilled against it.
From Mo Janeiro,—Mr. .Thnnms Oli
ver, nf Buenos Ayres, came passenger in
the Brig Robert, from Rio Janeiro, (arri
ved in Hamplmi Roads on Saturday.)
Mr. 0. states, that he arrived at. Kin Ja
neiro from Beunos Avres on the evening
of the 2Slh November; and no entering
the port saw a RUSSIAN SQUADRON
ht five sail; which had just anchored. On
lapdiug at Rio Janeiro, lie engaged his
passage in the Robert, which vessel sail
ed the next day tor Baltimore: While at
Rio Janiero he learnt that a BRITISH
SQUADRON of four sail of the line, un
der the command of Sin Thomas Haiidy,
had arrived at that port a week before,
and were still there. Mr. 0. did notlenrn
any particulars relative to either of the
squadrons or their destination, as he only
remained at Uin Janeiro one night—all
that lie undertakes tn state, is, that they
were at Rio at the time lie left there.

It is no business nf ours to doubt the a
bovr report; the only question is, what
should a Russian squadron have to do at
Rio Janeiro, It will be recollected that
there was some talk two or three years
ago of a cession from Spain to Russia, of
some nf the superfluous Spanish territory
in America; and the Californian we named
as most desirable to the Court of St. Pe
tersburg. We hail almost forgot the, cir
cumstance, and probably it. might never
again have occurred to us but fur the ap-
peareance of a Russian squadron on the
direct route to the Cnfifornias.—Still, if
we may be permitted to account in this
way for unexpected a movement, how
are we to explain the circumstance of the
meeting of a Russian and British squad-
ponr of s.i r.Lv.vjui.

Obituary.—Within a few days, says a corres
pondent, it has pleased Divine Providence to
call from time to eternity two estimable and va-
luuhlc citizens—Isaac /licks, & Henry A, Coster.
Having reached advanced ages, after lives of di
ligence, industry, he. they have terminated
their earthly career, leaving behind them im
mense wealth. Entering upon the great thea
tre of human life (^s it may he said) almost
without capital or friends, they by habits such
as merit the imitation of all, obtained for them
selves characters for probity, such as fall to the
lot of few. Embarked in vast commercial
operations, they were never known to obtain
tba ill will of those with whom they had inter
course. Exemplar)' in their habits and possess
ing almost every amiable quality their example
will long be remembered. Our city mourns a
common loss. But alas! they are numbered
with their fathers, and at rest with that Redem-
er which they worshipped. Reader, from these
sudden deaths, remember the uncertainty of
