country. 4'lils plan w«s stiififd to the circum
stances of that period, the port Kobo was then
composed uhnust entirety of original matter, mul
conducted with ability; mi l the “Alhcnieum,”
now published at ll-nton, lud not appeared.—
The British periodical publication* were objects
of fpvat intern' and curiosity, and from them
wax cosily formed a magazine, both useful ami
entertaining.
The title was changed anddViginri matter in
troduced when Mf. iVashiijjftoii Irving became
the editor, and the cmlicst volumes of the
alectic Muguiine" were enriched with some of
the finest production* of that elegant and justly
favorite writer. Prom that time to the present,

original composition upon subjects of hatnflial
literature, biography and history, varying in
quantity, according to the o- casions of it* pro
auction, and accompanied with a selection, more
choice and sparing, Fro.a a much increased n.iin
ker of foreign publications,
Considerable diversity of opinion has prevail.

the Mugattinc put Sly or.g'.ii.J, and ethers r

A periodical llrvinr, wholly original {jf truly
American, conducted with ability, <uid ex ten-
s.» ly putronhcd, ri indubitably a demlvi'utum in
Our country. The "North American ttyview,”
published quarterly at Huston, is the only work
which approaches this diameter. And until
• our reading public are more disposed thin at
present to encourage such an enUTprize, uiMh-

The present K.ditorof the Analertlc Magazhiy
is, however, desirous to gender it as nearly an
original Journal as public patronage will permit' 1
and tvilli if co'ciinistiuices allow, gradually ex
clude all foreign aid from its pages.
The length of the subscription list must, how
ever, determine the quantity of original compo
sition (but can he paid for, and it is obvious that
to depend on thu casual contributions of gentle-
mow who write either for their nnmsrment a-
lone, or from friendship to the Editor, woubl be
t very insecure dependence; tdtlunigh the Udi

communication* received, this year, from such
sources. Subscribers mat howev er be assured
that no worthless original matter shall he insert
ei\, merely because it is original, and no article
shall ever be inserted as original which is not
truly so, as is too often done tit some coletnpo

sition cannot be hoped for at once, of a satisluc-
tory quality, and in quantity sufficient to till all
the pages of the Magazine, no promise can at
present be made further than that us much shall
he procured as the patronage of the Journal
will allow.
The selected matter it is presumed, however
•ill he found of no little interest and value.—
The British journals have lately exhibited a ve
ry ailly animosity towards our Institutions, but
they still contain many very ingmiua disquiai-

be interesting and useful to the American pub-
