%* At a meeting of the Joint
Committee for distribution of monies collected
[or the relief of the distressed mittercm by the
Jat« hre, Savannah, February 24th, 1820.
1 lie lioard took into consideration the list
of applications for relief, and the amount of
losses, whereupon it was resolved, that the fol-
lowing claims be rejected, ns not falling within
the province of the churitnble fund entrusted to
this lioard, to be distributed amongst the'dis
tressed sufferers hy the late fire.
[List entered on the A ft nut rn,]
Resolved, That the said rejected list be en-
tererl on the Minutes for the information of all
concerned, with leave to either of the claim
ants, to make explanations a* to his or her dr-
cumstnnces and to adduce proof thercbn, to
enable this Committee to reconsider the rejec
tion now made, if this he applied for, on or be
fore tlie 2d day of March next.
Extract frem the Minutes.
AUGUSTUS DOgSSET, Sec*ry.
Many of tlie applications before the Joint
Committee have been rejected for an entire
want of evidence and formality, which might
have been avoided by proper attention to the
rule heretofore recommended: if this be wil-
fully neglected, it is but natural to suppose that
the person applying is indifferent about relief,
and not an object ot thq fund at the distribution
of this $oard, It is therefore, again, and for the
lust time recommended, that incapacity to bear
the losk and the state aud circumstances of the
pcrsoivanplying, (where not known to some of
the mynhera) must uppear, by actual affidavit
or col literal evidence: otherwise, persons may
tiRimaely complain of the amount nUottcd,
whicl would have been different, had proper
and c mmon precaution been taken. Many ap-
plicans. no doubt, frilly entitled to the atten
tion if the Board, are strangers to them, and
must attend to their own interest, and not im
pose ipon the members, the necessity of decid
ing i nsatisfactorily to themselves, or seeking
for iilbrmatioii from others, for the justification
of tlipir votes.
