Charleston, Sept. 29.
A duel occurred this afternoon (Monday)
near tills city (Charleston) between William R.
Taber Jr. esq., editor of the Meronry and Ed.

the third shot the boll entered Taber's head.

The difficulty grow ontof a series of comma *

to the Hon. A. J. Magrath, candidate for Con

[The communications were published over
the signature of a“Nnllifler.” Tho third and

day morning, and which probably caused the
difficulty, concluded as follows :]

whom we both stand. With.a full conscious
ness of my responsibility to truth, I claim to
have made not a single oharge against you
which cau, in the same spirit, be denied. You
placed yourself before the people as a candidate,
und thereby invited criticism. You and your
friends had no right to expect the immunity of
silence: and if my comments have seemed se
vere, I point to the facts, public notorius, ad

the "cry o/persicutum,” that ready refage from
the purauit of Justice, of falling fortunes, and
or bankrupt character,-—that pitiable appeal of
“help me, Cassius, or 1 sink”—is now raised in
your behalf. To such an appeal, at this time,
1 can only oppose the truth, and 1 demand jus

But when tho result is such as the telegraph

The cause of tho duel which has had so fatal
a termination, was the publication of aome ar

Editort Picayune—Wq have had a most un-
propitions season for cotton. First, the spring
was very late: then, the summer was general
ly too hot. Tbeopeniugof the cotton consc-
lueutlywoa retarded; yet, notwithstanding,
here were many floe crops. Hut the curso of
all pests, the boll worm, "came like a thief in
the night to do its work of death.” The plan
ters theught the climax of their misfortunes
was capped. They were mistaken. They but
little thought that thsse imps of Satan, the army
worm, in a legion, were to be let loose upon
them.
The top crop, the forlorn hopo of the oyer
sanguuleplanter,being young nud tender, is
tho lirst to lull to the insatiate tooth of these
fell destroyers. The results of these sad dis
pensations will be u half to twu-thirds of the
crop of 155; and to make it still worse, the
cotton picked from this time will be more or
ess trashed by these modern locusts. Ala n !

[Correspondence of tho Daily Delta.]
Palestinb, Adams County, Sept. 20,1856.
Eds. Delta: I have just returned from a (ly
ing trip to Nashville, Tennesace. I went by
way of Memphis, and through West and Mid
die Tennessee, and returned to Memphis by
way of Florence, Ala. I made especial inquiries
about the cotton crop on my whole route.
From my own observations mid what others
told mo, there will be a half crop made through
the sections i passed. In West Tennessee and
North Alabama, I saw hundreds of acres that
will not make two liuudred pounds sced-eottun
to the acre, und very often not a boll onnn
acre, and cotton not three inches high. This
isthe effect of the drought, which, from parti
cular inquiries. I learn, lias had the samo ef
fect on tho cotton throughout Tennessee,North
Mississippi, North Alubumu, and North Geor
gia.
I examined the Holds of cottou as 1 came down
the river—they certainly will bo very short.
Ono planter arid lie would not make ovor one
third of a crop: others, not over a half. The
great storm in Augont completely checked the
growth of cotton in the country urouud Natchez,
and seemi to havo had tba saiuo effect when
ever it reached. No one cau deny whut is
stated above, and tiiey are tacts tunt evory
planter ought to look to in deciding to scl 1 his
crop in the early market. Thero is no doubt
but thatthe crop will bo short, imdthat the
price of cotton will range ranch higher belore
the middle of next February. What crop is

A correspondent of tbo Philadelphia Ledger
wutiug from Oamp Dade, Florida, relates the
terriblo circumstances uuder whioh Mujar
Dade, with 110 men were destroyed there in
1836. They had been detailed to force their
way through from Fort Kiugto Tampa:
Nothing of Importance occurred till the
eighth day. On tho morning of that day they
renamed tho march from tueir last encamp
ment, (about oue mile und a half from this
place,) and were about cutting down some very
High grass, when n must deadly and deatruc
tive lire was opened ou them by on uusecn eue>
my, which struck dowu every maa of the ad-
vuuci-d guard. Muj. Dade and C'apt. Frazer
now went forward to ascertain the cause of the
bring when they too were Bbot down, and the
command devolved ou Gardner, who bad hU
right thigh shattered. He kept his post until
tie was shot dead.
Tho rear guurd, under the command of Lieut
Houdurson.iiow got ready the six-pounder,and
sent such tiiundcriug discharged of grape into
the glass, (lor as yet they hud not seen a foe),
that tho enemy were driven back nearly half a
mile, aud Lieut. Bussinger, with a party or
men, commenced the cutting of logs for tho
purpose of mukiug a breastwork for defence.
Tli is is still standing. They were not, however,
allowed much time, und hud only raised their
work about two leot when the ludiana, under
Miciiuopy, camo down ou them from another
poiut, uud iu less than twenty minutes, the
work of death wan so rapid, that every officer
but Bassirger was either killed or mortally
wouuded, and only seven men loft unhurt.
Lieut. Keys was shot iu the head, and exclaim
ing, “Oh, Godl I am a dead man!” seated him
self at the foot of a tree, where he remained
until Ids head was split open by the tomahawk
of a savage. Dr. Cutliu, who hud both legs
shattered, was dragged into tho little woric,
aud seizing a double barreled gun, said, “1 have
two barrels for them yet;*’ but, poor fellow, ho
soon ceased to uso them, as a ball from a rifle
entered his heart, killing him on the spot.—
Lieut. Bassingor now emerged from the works
to pick up what guns he could, and, as he was
about to return, he was shot down, with his
two legs and one arm shattered. He, however,
reached the enclosure with a few guns, and, fur
ncurly half un hour, he and tbreo privates kept
‘back the savages. At luBt, all were entirely
disabled hut himself aud private Clark. The
lire having slackened, the Indians now ap
proached, and contented themselves with rifliug
the bodies of the slain, Bassinger and Clark aU
tho time feigning to be dead.
Having taken every thing of value they could,
And, the Indians now retired, when Clark and^
Bassinger consulted on whut was to be done;
hut ulus 1 scarcely an hour had elapsed, when
some negroes, half breeds, and a few Indians
returned and commenced mutilating the bodies
of the slain in a most barbarous manner.
Liuut. Bassinger, on seeing this, raised him
self up, aud, appealing to a huge negro, who
svoku English, begged them to spare his life
lor the sake of his wife ; hut an hundred axes
were immediately ruked ou him,and Clark says
thu liltumlly cut him to pieces. Clark remained
quiet till they had left, and although with eleven
wouuds, waited till night, when be set out ou
his return to Fort King. This place ho finally
