Cotton Crop.
Walnut Bayoit. La., Sept. 21, 1830.
Editor* Picayune—VVe have had a most un-
propitious aeasou for cotton. First, tho spring
wm urj late: then, tho summer was general-
\y too hot. Tho opening of tho cotton codsc-
quently was retarded; yet, notwithstanding,
there were m*oy flno crops. Hut the curse of
all pecte, the boll worm, ‘‘came like a thief in
the night to do its work of death.’' The plan
ters thought the climax of their misfortunes
wm capped. They were mistaken. They but
little thought that these imps of Satau.tho urniy
worm, in a legion, were to bo let loose upon
them.
The top crop, the forlorn hope of tho ever
aa&gunleplanter, being young uud toudor, is
the first to fall to the insatiate tooth of these
fell destroyers. The results of these sad dis
pensations will be a half to two-thirds of tho
crop of 155; and to mako it still worse, the
cotton picked from this time will be more or
ess trashed by these modern locusts. Alas 1
poor planters!

TA* Cotton Crops in Mlaslaalppl, Ten-
nesaeo uud Alnliamu.
[Correspondence of tiio Daily Delta.]
Paleotinb, Adams County, Sopt. 20,1856.
Edt. Delta s I have just returned from a fly
ing trip to Nashville, Tennessee. 1 went by
way of Memphis, and through West ami Mid
die Tennessee, and returned to: Memphis by
way of Florence, Ala. I made especial inquiries
about the cotton crop on my whole route.
From my own observations und what others
told me, there will be a half crop made through
the sections I passed. In West Tennessee and
North Alabama, I saw hundreds of acres that
will not make two hundred pounds seed-cotton
to the acre, and very often not a boll ouan
acre, and cotton not three inches high. This
Isthe effect of the drought, which, from parti
cular inquiries. I learn, has had the same ef
fect on the cotton throughout Tennessee, North
Mississippi, North Alabama, and North Geor
gia.
I examined the Holds of cotton os I came down
the river—they certainly will be very short.
One planter said he would not make over oue
third of a crop: others, uot over a half. The
great storm in August completely cheeked the
growth of cotton in tho country around Natchez,
and aeemi to have bad tbt fame effect whom
ever it reached. No oue can deny what is
stated above, and they are tacts that every
planter ought to look to iu deciding to sell his
crop In the early market. There is no doubt
bat that the crop will be short, and that the
Prtce of cotton will range muoli higher beloro
the middle of next February. What crop is
made is being rapidly picked out und punned
into market, but tho great portion of it will
be picked out before tho midalo of October.

A bloody Reminiscence.
A correspondent of the Philadelphia Ledger
writing from Gamp Dade, Florida, relates the
terrible circumstunoes under whiob Major
Dade, with 110 men wore destroyed there in
1830. They had been detailed to force their
way through from Fort King to Tampa:
Nothing of Importance occurred till the
eighth day. On tno morning or that day they
resumed the march from their last encamp
ment, (about one mile and a half from this
place,) and were about cutting down some very
nigh grass, when a most deadly and destruc
tive fire was opened ou them by an unseen ene
my, which struck down every man of the ad
vanced guard. Maj. Dade and Cupt. Frazer
now went forward to ascertain the cause of the
iiriug when they too were shot down, and tho
commund devolved on Gardner, who had his
right thigh shattered. He kept his post until
hu was snot dead. .
The rear guard, under the command ofLlent
Henderson,now got ready the six-pounder,and
teat such thundering discharges of grape into
the grass, (lor as yet they bod not seen a foe),
that the enemy were driven back nearly half a
mile, and Lieut. Bassiuger, with a party of
men, commenced the cutting of logs for the
purpose of making a breastwork for defence,
i'hl^ is still standing. They were, not, however,
allowed much time, aud had only raised their
work about two feet when the Indians, under
Micanopy, came down on them, from another
point, and in less than twenty minutes, the
work of death was so rapid, that every officer
but Bassinger was either killed or mortally
wounded, and only seven men left unbare.
Lieut. Keys was shot in the head, and exclaim
ing, “Oh, God! I am a dead mum” seated him
self at the foot of a treo, where be remained
uutil his head was split open by the tomahawk
of a savage. Dr. Gatlin, who hud both legs
shattered, was dragged into the little work,
aud sciziug a double barreled gun, said, “I have
two barrels for them yet;" but, poor fellow, he
soon ceased to use them, as a ball from a rifle
entered his heart, killing him on the spot.—
Lieut. Bassinger now emerged from tho works
to pick op what guns he could, and, as he was
about to return, Ue was shot down, with his
two legs aud one arm shattered. He, however,
reached the enclosure with a few guns, and, for
nearly half an hour, he and three privates kept
back the savri&es. At last, all were entirely
disabled but himself aud private Clark. Tho
lire having slackened, tho Indians now ap
proached, and contented themselves with riflinj
the bodies of the slain, Bassinger and Clark al
tho time feigning to be dead.
Having taken every tl

but alas t scarcely an hour had elapsed, when
some negroes, half breeds, and a few Indians
returned and commenced mutilating the bodies
of the slain in a most barbarous mauner. .
Lieut. Bassinger, ou seeing this, raised him
self up, and, appealing to a huge negro, who
spoke Euglish, begged them to spare his life
fur the sake of his wife ; but an hundred axes
were immediately raised on him,and Clark says
tho litterally cut him to pieces. Clark remained
quiet till they had left, and although with eleven
wounds, waited till night, when he setofit on
his return to Fort King. This place he finally
reached, aud is now iu New York, pensioned by
the Government on the pitifhlsam of eight dol
lars per month.
Such, gentlemen, wm the massacre of Dade
and bis iU-starred command. I have examined
the whole ground for one mile round, and dan
not imagine a spot more suitable for an am
buscade than tho Indians had selected. About
two months after the massacre, a detachment,
under tho command of Mqjor Bonneville, visit
ed the spot and buried the dead* the officers in
one grave, tho soldiers In another. The officers
-’ave is now entirely under water; nothing of
can be seen but a board at the head of the
grave.
