Chicago, Thursduy, Sept. 25, 1850.
The Niagara left Colllngwood ut 2 r. m., on
Mouday, with between 160 and 175 passeugers.

arrived at 21*. ii. yesterday.
When two hours from Sheboygan the passen
gers discovered lire issuing from tho ongine
room, and in a few minutes the whole cubin
was Inflames. The wildest consternation fol
lowed. The boats were lowered and filled, hut
capsined, excepting one containing twenty pas
sengers. Numbers jumped overbourd and were
instantly drowued.
The steamer Traveller was ten miles distant
when tho fire was discovered, but saved thirty
persons. The propeller Illinois, bound down,
also picked up about thirty and lauded them at
Sheboygan. A life boat nt Poit Washington
rescued twenty persons. Their names have not
been received.
George Haley, clerk of the Niagara, is sup
posed to bo lost, I’rolmbly fifty or sixty lives
aro lost in all. There is a rumor in tho city this
aftemoou, that the fire was tho work of uu in
cendiary. It is stated that immediately after
the fire was discovered a keg of noWdcr cxplod'
ed, blowing the flames in every aircctiou. Tho
first engineer was not ou board.
There is no telegraph to Port Washington or
—leboygan, and wo liave consequently to wait
for a full Ust of those lost by the burning of tho
Niagara. Indeed, we may uot get it at' all, as
the possengcr list was burned on board the
boat.
