Tbo Southern Railroad commences at Jackson,
tho capital or tho 8tato, and is finished a* far as the
town of Brandon; aud Is In good running order
and well equipped to that point. It extends from
Brandon lu a liuq almost directly oast eighty-two
and a half miles, to the intersection, of the Mobile
and Ohio Railroad, a few miles bolow tho town or
Marlon, in Lauderdale county; and passes through
the counties of Rankin. Scott and Now ton. Tho
line lx over a bigh rolling country, well watered
and timborod,and in point orbeaUlituluoss,ecouom
teal living, Ac., Is equal to the most fovored
portions ortho Carolinos and Georgia. The grading,
except fer the first twenty mile* lx generally light;
and upon the most of the BectionB tho excavation
and embankment alternate favorably: tho excop-
lions being in thu two heaviest cuts. The material
is or*character easily moved, the growth of tho
country ufibrUs abundance or timber suitable tor
bridging and Gross'ties;anditls believed that no
work offers, in locilltles for construction, greater
inducomonis to contractors, especially tiioso using
negro labor.
The company U entirely out of debt, aud has due
to it by roliablo stockholders, about $: 30,000, which
wllldoubtless bo paid as the Board of Managers may
callltin. It Is aLo an recipient under the recent
grant ofLnds mado by CoogresB, it they can be bad
along tlio lino, which is boltevod to bo the cose, of
nearly 400,000 acres of land.
The road conuccts with and is an extension of
tho Vickburg and Jackson Railroad, completed and
in full operation to tho Mississippi river at Vickburg;
.postto which city, in Louisiana, commences the
, icksburg, Sbrevonpoxt and Texas Railroad, now
undor contract fer its whole distance aud ia rapid
progress or construction. It intersoots the New
Orloausand Jacluon. Groat .Northern Railway at
Jackson, and through that at Canton, connects with
the Mississippi Conical Railway, the iron of which
is now bclUK laid to Holly SpringB. it intersects
with tlio Mobile aud <;hio Railroad, as already stat
ed, near Marlon, and its point or Intersection moots
with tlio Nortli-eastorn uud Southwestern Railroad
in Alabama, and through that unites with tho roads
iu Virginia, Tennc8seo and North Carolina. It is
also an ludispensablo link in tho lino or Railways
that are to unite Charleston and Savanuah. through
Montgomery, Vicksburg, Bhrovenport and El Paso,
with the Pacific Ocean running its entire longth on
tbossmo parallel of latitude with these places. 11
Is tlms obvious that ibis lino or work Is ono ortho
mo:t Important unfinished enterprises in tho coun
try. It is thorough National in Us character: for
it unites Maine and New Orleans, and the Atlantic
and the Mississippi, by Indlssoluable bonds. But
whilst thus National, it appeals especially fer aid to
Southern men and Southern enterprise, for when
completed, with tho intermediate gap in Alabama,
it will, with its connections, now built and being
built, run right through the heart ot those great
Southern cotton-growing States, Louisiana, Missis
stppi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, and
unttos the great Inland Boa with the broad ocean.
Thoso facts aro stated to call attention to this line
of road and to induce capitalists and contractors, to
embark liberally in its construction. The fifteen
miles or completed Railroad, with its oquipmeuts
and sixty valuable slaves, many of thorn mechanics,
is a bonus from the State or Mississippi; the publiu
land has been donated by Congress ; and It is, per
haps, not greatly over-estimating tho present pro
perty ortho road to pat itat or near ono mililon of
dollars. In which sum feturo stockholders who may
bocomo such by direct subscription of money or
work, will boat onco equally Interested. It will
thus be soen that this road prosents peculiar In
ducements to men of moons to ongage In Ua con
struction.
