Ntw-Vork, March li. On Thursday night lift, between the boors of
feleven and twelve o'clock, a fire broke out in Scotch* street, and it is ge
nerally agreed that it began in a house belonging to Mr. Hampton, and
‘known by the name of the Lodge, and that it must have consumed a con
fiderable part of the inside before it jsas difeovered, as the building was
. reduced in less than 20 minutes after the discovery was made—this was
observed by a person who was unable to affcft.—-The rapidity with which
it burnt, and the extreme scarcity of water, together with the narrowness
of the street, and the wooden materials oF which the neighbouring build
ings were composed, baffled the moft a&ive vigilance of people of all
rankV and conditions; so that in left than two hours from its lirft appear
ance, it extended to fourteen dwelling houses and (lores, on both sides
of the street, thegreateft part of which were consumed in about two hours
tndahalf. The impetuosity of the flames rendered it impoflible fur feve
xal of thefuffrrers to save their wearing apparel, much less their furni
ture, Sec. So that they are really become proper objeels of charity, more
efpccially the aged ar.d fatherlefs, fome of whom have neither food nor
raiment, or place to lay their heads, but what their humane friends and
neighbours provide for them, fome of whof* circu nflances will not long
afford them relief; so that their case call, for the m >lt fpceiy and bene
volent assistance, which it is u<ft doubted but the well diipafei will afford
them.
